X-Cart 4.2 released

Hi!

We are glad to announce that we have released X-Cart 4.2. It is available for downloading in your private members area.

There are no skins for 4.2 but the integrated css-based Light&Lucid yet. We plan to adapt a couple of popular 4.1's commercial skins and make them available to X-Cart 4.2 users, but it will take pretty much time due to making them css-based.

Also, I would like to say that now X-FancyCategories module is 100% css-based, doesn't require JavaScript in w3c-compliant browsers (the only browsers requiring JavaScript are IE, including the 8th one) and is search-engine friendly (all html code needed to display popup menus is put after the page contents).

For more information please refer to the news section at http://www.x-cart.com

Thank you!

Best regards,

Congrats on the release, just in time for the holidays! :)

Anyone insane enough to go live with 4.2 on Dec 17 is well, not selling consumer goods.

However, I look forward to testing 4.2 and I congratulate the x-cart team for getting us this far. Now please go back to work and get 4.3 ready!

FYI the demo on x-cart.com is not working

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Good job on the release, and I second the thoughts of releasing/upgrading prior to the holidays could speak suicide.

Will the upgrade to the new CSS theme etc have any effect on other add-on modules that have been made for X-Cart? I know that it's not X-Cart's responsibility to check that, but just curious if any of them will break.

Maybe we can start a thread for X-Cart 4.2 Add-On's, so that authors of the 3rd party modules can comment if the Add-On has been tested and is compatible with 4.2?

Yes this is a great idea and very much needed, if the providers aren't already noting this on their product pages.

I like the thumbnail images for product categories, is it possible by default to "Feature categories" on the home page, this would be a an excellent addition.

Looks like it's time to go through the code and backport anything necessary

I believe that if an online store is live and generating sales, it's better for the merchant to wait with upgrading to 4.2. Many of its features are already available to 4.1 merchants as third-party modules; so, if you have already installed these modules, 4.2 most likely won't introduce new features.

However, if you are building a new online store, 4.2 will be a better platform, than 4.1.

As for third-party 4.1 modules: I guess none of them will work with 4.2 due to the new css-based design and changes in the code.

What happened to hte larger image pop up? I don't see it in the demo neither at customers side or Detailed Images upload in Admin.

Also will the new FancyCats mod version work with 4.1.8? Anything to speed up the pages.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Congrats for the new version. Will wait till January to test though :)

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

One of the reasons I chose X-Cart was that it was suppose to be easy to upgrade without aving to start over. Please forgive the naieve question, but does this mean that, after about one month of use, the skin that I purchased for 4.1.11 and the modules such as configurator, and several others are now obsolete?

I just got the store up and running and it's doing well, so I won't try the upgrade till after the holidays.

For those of us who don't know the difference between Smarty and CSS, could someone explain in simple language what this means to upgrading our stores?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Rob!

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

You won't be able to upgrade to 4.2, as it uses a completely different template system. You'd need to install a fresh copy of 4.2, and import your upgraded (I assume they will release an upgrade patch for the DB) database into the new DB.

Will an Upgrade Pack be available soon?

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Hi,

I assume x-cart still uses smarty templates, but now, instead of using table layouts, x-cart will have css-based layouts. This creates much cleaner code that is more search-engine friendly, and, it's much easier to read and modify.

Correct

Would that be any different than purchasing one of those 100% css skins?

It will if you want to be able to use X-Cart's modules and upgrades :)

But no upgrade available......wonderful

balinor 12-18-2008 06:19 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

An upgrade would be nearly impossible - going from a table-based layout to a CSS-based layout.

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Balinor, I have never paid that much attention to new releases. How long does it usually take for third party mods to catch up?

balinor 12-18-2008 07:28 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Usually it is pretty quick as the templates aren't all that different, but with the completely new template system, this will take a while I imagine.

SystemSkins 12-18-2008 07:35 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

So 2-3 months before they announce this version is "Stable" ?

balinor 12-18-2008 07:36 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

No, they aren't doing that with this release - read this thread:

3 to 6 months about what you might estimate.

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Being declared stable and being stable are not the same - I'd still recommend 3-6 months before upgrading.

Love the new cart however I think the release was a bit rushed. You should have did one more set of beta testing. I found allot bugs in the first beta and did not get to test it after you fixed them. However now im testing the released version and i have found 2 bugs all ready. I just think one more round of beta testing would have have found all bugs.

I agree, I'm a little disappointed with new template. Many important parts of the skin are still table based (featured products, product listing, product page, menu cart, forms etc.). Also, css should be optimized , it is very complicated and too big ....73kb, 3985 lines8O .

Anyway, congrats on the release.

Sounds like an opportunity for a commercial product!

Ahh thanks, however I still am hesitant to upgrade anytime soon.

So you saying 4.2 isn't 100% tableless?

It's not going to be when there's tabular data

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Great the 4.2 is here. i am almost ready with a completely new deisgned xcart 4.1 :( wanted to go online with it 1st januari. lol. But now i have things to do during christmas hehe. So i started with 4.2 now.... BUT bad luck. Cannot edit the templates etc.
Admin safe mode is set to false. attributes even set to 777 on all files, STILL CAN NOT EDIT the templates.. Whats wrong?

balinor 12-18-2008 10:17 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.2 released

Tables are still useful in some situations - like tabular data :) That's what they were originally made for, and are still effective when used the right way.
