Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Webmaster mode for my store based on ver. 4.0.19 has stopped working.
Well, I should say, it's not working fully any longer.
The console loads, but there's no "highlighting" on mouseover and no template names are displayed at the bottom of the page (status bar).
At the same time, my other store, based on ver. 4.1.8 has had no such problems. I've gone through most of the .tpl files looking at timestamps in hopes of locating a file that I might have inadvertantly changed, but haven't found any.
Just talked to the people administering the server, but they have made no changes on their side.
What would cause such a behaviour?

Thanks,

Jack

Anybody? Any idea, whatsoever?
I'm not asking for guarantees here, gentlemen (and ladies) :)

did you make any changes to your .htaccess file?

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

I may have, but what kind of change would cause webmaster mode to fail?
You know, I just restored my .htaccess file from the backup I made when webmaster mode was working. Cleared the cache, restarted IE and still no cigar :(

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

I made a change to my .htaccess file where I stopped access to capitalize files.

Stopped webmaster mode from working.

Have you made any changes to the store.

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

I'm constantly changing things around, but for the past three nights, I've been going over all the files with a modified timestamp to the time webmaster mode was working, and just can't find anything....
I do get 'object expected' errors in IE7 when the webmaster mode loads.
They don't happen in FF.

No mouseover effect at all in webmaster mode...

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

What about comparing source to see what the difference is? From, say, a copy that works from a test install.

And to remove any doubt about htaccess... why not temporarily rename the file and then see if webmaster works.

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Just a question, did you update anything on your home computer?

imexhouse 03-16-2008 05:57 PM

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Just regular updates - Windows and Java...
But, my 4.1.8 store's webmaster mode works fine. Renaming .htaccess doesn't help.
In IE7, I'm getting those "object expected" javascript errors every time I load webmaster mode. I don't get those in 4.1.8
I disabled javascript references in the <head> of single/home.tpl, and I'm not sure what else could be loading that conflicts with webmaster mode.

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

You know, I've been going over every .tpl file that has a newer date than a month ago - that's when I was using webmaster mode last without any problems. I've been replacing them with stock templates. No help.

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Can't you get any more info on the "object expected" errors? It should say more detail where it started and what it is looking for, no?

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

I've downloaded MS Script Debugger, but when it loads, a blank window loads only. I can't get it to load the actual page, but I'm no programmer either.
I've been looking all over Google for those Javascript errors, and none of the answers are applicable.
I'm telling you, this is just driving me up the wall. And, it's not that crucial at the moment that the webmaster mode works, but I don't want to be caught with my pants down when I really need it to work :)

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Even though webmaster mode doesn't work in Firefox, the Web Developer toolbar extension may help find any niggling errors - even if they look & run perfectly in Firefox

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Thanks bro. You know what - it's working in FF!
I swear it wasn't - but I did make some restorations to certain files..
So, it's just IE and its stupid javascript errors!
I'll install webdeveloper and get on it first thing tomorrow morning.
11 hours in front of the monitor is just about as much as I can take.

Thanks for all your help.

Jack

Re: Webmaster Mode Stopped Working

Webmastermode appears to not work with the latest version of the FireFox addon NoScript ver 1.7.1. (This is on FireFox 2.0.0.14)

After installing the latest version of NoScript - the Webmaster mode mouseovers in the debugger window have no effect (on XCART 4.1.9 and 4.1.10). The changelog for NoScript says "JS redirect detector sensibility enhancement" - so it appears the enhancement does not like how Webmaster mode allows the popup to control the main window. I can disable NoScript and webmastermode works again.
