Designers? What Res do you design for?

Well it's all in the title.

I vary the res depending on the target audience; the older the audience the smaller the resolution, the more technically savvy the larger the resolution, but in general 1024X768.

Quote from their site, just above the stats:

W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. This fact indicates that the figures below might not be 100% realistic. The average user might have display screens with a lower resolution.

It is for general info only. You need to determine your own visitors demographics. I usually design for the 1024x768 crowd, as anyone who is still on 800x600 probably doesn't know how to use an e-commerce site anyway ;)

I figure Im selling to businesses and business people with newer comps. I think I'll keep it at 1024 x 768.

1024

Just remember to account for scrollbars and possibly menus on the side. 950 is usually a good size if designing for 1024x768

Screen resolution does not equal available pixels for the browser. There are lots of people who don't maximize thier browser to full screen - especially as you get into the larger/wide screens. Some people leave various sidebars and toolbars displayed. Here's a good article on the issue.
http://www.baekdal.com/reports/actual-browser-sizes/

The bottom line is design for 776 usable pixels wide if you want to cover 95% of your visitors. Of course that's based on the data in the article from October of last year from the sites surveyed. It would be really nice to see a current survey of browser viewport resolution for a wider audience. Even better, I'd like to see it tracked in X-Cart instead of screen resolution.

Since this was last visited almost two years ago, are the thoughts/opinions the same?

Every time I think it's safe to move up from 800, I see a client who is struggling with sides cut off on websites. Florida's a little backwards, but... I still design for 800. Of course, I do get some clients asking why the website is so narrow.

Even for my own browsing I often prefer 800 px wide. My display is 1920 x 1200, but I usually have several windows open at the same time.

I'm still designing on the 1024x768 however if it's a site aimed at tech people and programmers rather than the general public, then I design in larger resolutions.
