Changing Template Design

My friend is running 4.1.6 - we just moved his store to the index, and things are working well. He's finally realized that using the reverse template with categories on the right doesn't make sense to his customers and wants to move it back to a regular template.

I changed the file permissions like you do for a new install, go to install.php and select to reinstall skins only. Once I select the skin type and press enter, I get this error:

Copying templates...
Copying skin1_original/payments/cc_payflow_pro.tpl to skin1/payments/cc_payflow_pro.tpl ... [FAILED]

Fatal error: Fatal error occured while creating directories. Please check permissions and try again.
Please correct the error(s) before proceeding to the next step

****

With the store moved to the index folder, is there any other permissions Issues I'm to be aware of, I've gone through those files listed above, and they have the correct permissions - or are they supposed to be set different for reinstalling templates.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are in the root now, you may need to make your root directory writable.

Thanks Balinor, I'm not too knowledgable about permissions, so I only change what I know, so can you let me know what setting I should change the root to, and afterwards, what I should change the root back to?

Re: Changing Template Design

Depends on your server, but I'd try 766 or 777. Make a note of what it is set to now and set it back to that.

So I've tried 766, and 777 and 755 on the root directory, and still get the same message - any other ideas

Are each of the sub-folders also writable?

Josaram 05-02-2007 06:54 AM

Re: Changing Template Design

Yup, the subfolders go to whatever I set the root too - so on those 3 different settings, the subfolders changed too, and I still get the same error.

Re: Changing Template Design

Okay, now I'm completely lost, I just double checked the permissions on the payment/*.pl files, and they were 000 - so I set them to 666 and then I got this message from my ftp program:

550 safetylite.com/payment: No such file or directory

Well, there shouldn't be a directory, because the website is kdlsafetylite - not safetylite - so now I'm completely lost as to what is going on, and why those files had to moved to permission 000

Is there anything else that could have changed or been messed around with moving it to the root directory that I may need to adjust for the templates?

Re: Changing Template Design

So going back to the skin file error - I find that it keeps defaulting back to 777 - even though every other file is 755 - when I try to make the skin folder set to 755 - it says

Request denied.
Please verify that the file or folder exists and that you have the necessary permissions on the server to perform the requested operation.

So what can be controlling it, I can change permissions on every other folder but this one?

Re: Changing Template Design

Did you update the config.php file to remove the sub-directory? Also, what FTP client are you using? And who is the 'owner' of the files, is it apache or root?

Josaram 05-02-2007 07:33 AM

Re: Changing Template Design

Yes, the config file had the sub directory removed (just in the one spot) and left with just the two quote marks. I am using cute ftp but also tried direct from the control panel, and as for the owner of the file...I'm not very good at this part.

All the files are listed under the root directory and not directly under the server - is that what you need?

When I just tried to change it through the control panel file manager, I got this error:
/kdlsafetylite.com/skin1 - Unable to change permission, file has different UID ( 398 )

I've also just sent a ticket into my host - cause something must be messed up with the folder??? I'm lost when it comes to permissions stuff

Thank you once again Balinor for all your help with this, I do appreciate it...

Re: Changing Template Design

What happens sometimes is the 'owner' of the file gets changed and then you are not able to make any modifications to it. You can see the 'owner' column if you turn it on in Cute FTP. Usually it will default to your username, but if it gets set to Apache or something other than the username, it may not be able to be changed via FTP. The solution would be to use the chown command, but your host may be able to assist you with this if you are not familiar with shell access.

Re: Changing Template Design

Thanks Balinor, I've forwarded all the info to my host, because many files have the wrong owner - thank you for helping me identify that as the source of the problem...I don't feel like pulling my hair out anymore, cause I know it can be resolved now...thank you
