BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

Hello. I have xcart gold version 4.1.6. I installed 3 BCSE mods total. The free Static meta tags for 4.1.x free category meta title for 4.1.x and the product meta tags pro (which I purchased) for 4.1.x. Would there be conflicts between the free static meta tags and product meta tags pro? The reason i ask is because these mods aren't working properly.

Whatâ–“s the difference between the static pages meta mod and the product meta tags pro. Can these be used together?

The only mod working properly is the free category meta title. However it only works if I have "Include categories' META data into the site meta tags" and Include products' META data into the site meta tags: turned on under SEO options..

When these options are turned off nothing is added in the description and keyword tags.

In regards to product meta tags pro, if these options are turned on. What I put in the 3 extra field on the product page aren't displayed in the meta fields on the page. Just the standard x-cart meta stuff which includes the mini description
of the product and odly enought ALSO the meta information that I put in for the categories (free category meta mod).

Is it possible to uninstall these mods just by deleting/changing back to the existing files.. Can i still keep the new SQL? how do I delete the SQL patches completely?

First I would contact BCSE and see if they can help.

Second, hopefully you did a backup of your store and database before you installed the modifications. If BCSE can not help, you probally will have to use a back restore to fix everything.

Right. I may have to uninstall. Have you used these mods? I cant understand the difference betwen static meta mods and product meta tags pro.

To answer one of your questions:

"Static" refers to "static embedded" pages -- pages you create for things such as help, faq, shipping, store locations, etc...

"Product" would be your product detail pages.

They are very different animals.

I would uninstall/revert to your backup, then slowly, install and configure one of the mods at a time. Test. happy? Move on.

I own the product meta tags pro, and have the other 2 free mods from BCSE. I wouldn't open an xcart store without these essential mods (unless you have no desire to be indexed by the major search engines).

Hi,

Just wandering what impact these mod's would have on a site that's live for about 11 months? Right now I have over 80% of my pages in the Google supplemental index so what would you recommend best to get out of there? My version is 3.4.9. but 4.1.5 is under development.

If 80% of your site is in the supp, then your SEO plan isn't working, and you must find another way.

Here's a post that has some VERY GOOD links that may help you.

You are right, but I didn't have an SEO plan or knowledge until I recently started to read this forum. But the damage has already been done just like it happened with you Jeremy. With a redesigned site, updated X-Cart, updated content and a new structure in place the SERPS should be getting better. I was actually questioning if it would make sense if I start implementing the product & category meta mods now on my old site.

It's never too late to fix what's broken. It may take a few months or more for google to self-correct, but once you get these things corrected, it will all fall in place. It's too bad it's not a stock part of xcart.

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

carpeperdiem.. I did exactly whart you suggested. I completely re-installed my cart and tried installing product meta tags pro and ths stupid thing is STILL not working right. I installedi t perfectly right...

The meta stuff from the .php pages is still the factory x-cart meta information and not that is put in the new fields made by BCSE...

It also is not correct on the html catalog pages. Are there any settings I need in x-cart for this to work?

1. Did you do the sql patch in the admin? It sounds like this step may not have been completed.
Quote:

1. Log into your Admin interface and copy and paste the SQL queries in patch.sql into the Patch/Upgrade sql utility.

2. html catalog pages? I do not know if this will work with html catalog pages.

DO ONE mod at a time. No more.

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

Well Carrie from BCSE came through and fixed the problem for me. Allegedly there was more steps to get this mod working then was in the readme.. SHe said she had to make a few changes to the files included with the mod but there was no mentioning that in the readme... It is all working perfectly now. BCSE support came through as promised-Jeff

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

An update, the issue was the mod wasn't configured. This step must have been missed when he installed. I logged in and updated the info in the product_keywords.php and everything started working after that.

Just an FYI to anyone else having troubles. Make sure you've set up the configuration via the new link this mod creates in your admin.

Thanks Jeremy for trying to help! :)

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

Jeff,

Actually this is in the "usage" at the bottom of the readme.txt. Maybe some of it was missed?

Let me know if it's not clear and we'll update our instructions, but we usually don't have this issue of this step being missed.

Thank you!

Carrie

USAGE:

After installing the mod, create three "Extra Fields": "keywords" "description", and "title". If you do not want the keywords, description and title extra fields to show on the product details, uncheck the "show" checkbox.
Then choosing "Product Keywords" new link in the admin, allows the admin to assign which extra field is for the product meta title, keyword and description. Here you should use the exact title you named when you created the extra field.
Now meta keywords, meta description, and meta title can be added to each product.
If a product doesn't have keywords or description defined, the product title will
used to make meta keywords and the description will be
used to make a meta description.

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

I'm a bit confused. When I click on "Product Keywords" in admin, I get this instruction:

Enter keywords or keyword phrases separated by a comma (,) that you want to appear on every product page

How does that correspond with the instruction: "assign which extra field is for the product meta title, keyword and description"?

BCSE 04-18-2007 03:35 PM

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

Scott,

That is an optional feature you can use. If you want to have a certain set of keywords on the product pages appended to the unique ones you enter in for each product, then you use this field. So if you want:
footwear, rainwear, sportswear

appended to every product's keywords, you use this field. Some use this feature some do not.

Let me know if you have more quesitons!

Thank you,

Carrie

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

Thanks, but it is not working for me. My product pages still have the old desc and keywords.

Ex: http://www.hellyhansenusa.com/store/helly-hansen-adventure-top-pr-16945.html

The Extra field for this product reads:
Quote:

field=keywords&&&value=Helly Hansen, Adventure Top, LIFA, VERSA, fleece###field=description&&&value=Helly Hansen Adventure Top fleece with LIFA VERSA###field=title&&&value=

Looking at source, that file shows:

Quote:

<meta name="description" content="Helly Hansen Adventure Top. By combining LIFA baselayer technology with a soft elastic fleece, you get the ultimate base-and midlayer piece for all...">
<meta name="keywords" content="Helly,Hansen,Adventure,Top,Helly Hansen Adventure Top, ">

The instructions for 4.0.x say

Quote:

"Open the meta.tpl found in this zip and modify your meta.tpl accordingly (see the sections commented by {* BCSE *} comments and upload."

but I don't see what should be edited.

BCSE 04-18-2007 07:12 PM

Re: BCSE Meta Mods -Product Meta tags Pro.

You should find in the meta4.0.13.tpl in the zip some comments looking like:
{* BCSE begin *}
CODE HERE
{* BCSE End *}

you put this code in your meta.tpl in the same place you find it in the meta4.0.13.tpl (there is a meta.tpl for versions earlier than 4.0.13).

We did this because some people modify their meta.tpl and it was easier to demonstrate where code should go rather than the typical, Find this line and insert this code.

If that doesn't help, just email us your meta.tpl and we can send it back modified for you. Email support

Thanks,
Carrie

Carrie, I sent my meta.tpl to your support team on Wednesday night. I'm looking forward to getting it back and finally fix this meta tags issue.

Thanks, Scott
