3.4.0 Released
Just to let everyone know that the long awaited 3.4.0 version is now in your file area :D
No upgrade patch in there yet but I am sure that will follow very shortly. |
Woot!
Yee-haw! :) May have spoke too soon. No Canada Post Real-time shiping from what I can make out in the change-log. This was a necessary improvement for Canadian X-Carters. |
and the Changelog ...

Wow, that's one huge changelog, but it looks like it has all of the 3.3.x branch changes in it.
No upgrade kits though! Just in case I'm feeling a bit masochistic, any ideas on how would I go about upgrading from 3.3.5? I could probably do it on a new store that I only have a few test products loaded on. |

YAY! I'm off to abuse this now and see how it holds up... |

I have no idea what this is? Anyone? Randy |
The new wish list thing is cool. You can send your wish list to somebody and when they go look at it, the store remembers which wish list they viewed and adds a link called "Friend's Wish List" to the shopping cart module.
It's much more funcitonal. AND... Quote:
Giddy Up :!: |
Thank you X-CART team! This is really shaping up into an incredible shopping cart!
|
WOW, that's a change log and a half!
*runs off to upgrade his current shop* :D |
Anyone know when the 3.3.5 > 3.4.0 upgrade is going to be released?
This weekend would be nice in case I F&#@ it up. :) |
WOW!!!
Huge and much needed improvements. Thanks X-Cart team :) I think I will do a seperate new install to test from off a seperate DB and get modded to my design as there is such a change I think I will need to live with this one for a while in a non live environment- images in the filesystem YA! I also noticed that it says that a new sessions system is implemented. Will this fix the php_sessions table from becoming corrupted? It has been killing my cart every other day or so an I have had to watch it like a hawk. |
WARNING !!
BE WARNED !!
If you already have a version of xcart up and running dont delete the whole thing and start over with V3.4.0 or any brand new version for that matter. Its always best to try a setup in a new folder and a new database first to see how things go. Theres no point closing down your business unless you know that things are gonna work right in your server environment. Im not saying V3.4.0 does not work but there are many variations in server setups and any new version can contain problems that dont come to light untill its released to the public. If you do come across any problems then dont forget to include your server setup information in your post Good Luck |
:(
 I'm very sad... At this moment I'm finishing one store based on xcart 3.3.5 and now I see that there is new version... I've made a lot of changes and now as I see I'll have to do it again....
|
I too have a 3.3.5 store that just recently went live.
You should not feel any pressure to upgrade unless the latest version has features that your store absolutely must have. 3.3.5 is now the "stable" release. 3.4.0 is bound to have bugs and issues. I wouldn't advise rushing off to upgrade until there is a compelling reason to do so. :) |
Has anyone managed to install and successfully run Xcart 3.4.0 on PHP versions LESS than PHP 4.3.1?
So far we've only heard of people being able to install and have it working on PHP 4.3.1 version below this seem to result in White screens for customer and admin areas. I've had success on a server that runs PHP 4.3.1 and failure on a server with PHP 4.2.1 (which xcart 3.3.5 works happily on) |
I am running it successfully on PHP Version 4.2.3

X-Configurator is a module for X-Cart. It is available for $95. It allows you to sell products which are built from a set of products (like personal computers). The module can handle situations like "This Athlon motherboard will work with Athlon CPU only; this DIMM will work work with the listed motherboards only, etc...". You can find more info on the module at http://www.x-cart.com/. We will set up a demo shortly. |

Any know where I can actually find the functionality to set up new order statuses? I am assuming that this enhancement will allow me to change the "Queued", "Not Finished"... statuses to statuses that I need. Is this right? I hope so, if it is this rocks! |
Where in the file are is this?
I am doing a new install what file do I download? There is software distributives (nothing in there), updates (3 file in there), upgrades (13 files in there) and thats it. The tech support is in Russia I am in the USA. When I get up they are just getting off work, when I am in bed for 2 hours they are just getting to work. Does anyone know where I find the file for the initial install?

The downloads should be located in your "Software distributives" section. If it's not, and you feel it should be, I would use your personal "Message Board" to contact the X-Cart folks. |
Is this going to be a regular thing that as soon as we finish a shop a new version pops up? Okay we don't have to upgrade, but the images out of the directory thing has been a key concern of many on these forums. It would make me think twice about doing any serious modifications other than the odd bit of tpl editing.

yeh, new versions do come out but thats not a problem.
You only need to update if you need the new features. Its up to you |

I feel somewhat the same, though I've been modding this cart long enough now that I've learned to wait for several new releases before upgrading. Having a cart that gets updated by the developers at such a rapid pace is a double-edged sword, but I find it beats the hell out of the competition's release and update schedules. Often you can just grab particular files from the latest update to patch just the important features that need patching on your version (if you know PHP). My cart is running parts of 3.3.1-3.3.4 and I'm quite happy to see all the new features in the latest version. Still not looking forward to rehacking it, but it gets easier with each new version. I hope the ultimate goal for the x-cart programmers is to completely modularize the modules so they can simply be installed/removed in a manner such as PostNUKE's module system. That's my only real gripe at this point. We need single-directory installs for the module architecture. Preferably the system would register standardized modules and then use an engine that didn't rely on modifying dozens of files for integration, but would function more like the plug-in architecture from programs such as Dreamweaver or Photoshop. I've seen other PHP-based CMS that have pulled it off and I'm certain the x-cart team could do it. It would probably be a non-upgradeable change to the code-base though....eveyone would have to do fresh installs and relearn how to mod the cart. Anyway, I'll shut up now and start playing with the new code! |

I agree. This model, in my opinion, would translate to more new customers (and cross-overs from open source apps.) - it would def. benefit X-Cart and customers. |
I also go with the idea of drawing a line and working on a version that address's all the issues and is more modular in its construction.
I suppose when they went fron f-cart to x-cart this sort of happened |
Actually, we are already working on providing our customers with a much more "modular" structure of X-Cart.

Testing on a second database?
Ok i have requested a second database from my host provider. Now i need to know how to install the latest version of x-cart for testing before upgrading my live site.
Can someone post exactly the best way to do this? Thanks! |
the same as you did your current version but do it in a new folder and add the details of your new database instaed of your old one

RRF there seems to be alot of core changes in x-cart that makes upgrading tricky after customising the system even a little. I think the core of x-cart is actually of a level where it coulld possibly be locked down and all future enhancements become "added" modules? This way say from 3.5 you have the "core shop system" and the extra upgrades would be modules we can add/upgrade as needed. This would save alot of headaches and also enable 3rd party support modules to be written more easily. You could simply have a "module" section on the site where we could pick and choose what we need to add to the system. There seems alot of patches/upgrades etc that can be offputting. I'd feel safer in the knowledge that an upgrade doesn't need to replace everything everytime if you understand what i mean. |
A changelog, with the actual list of files altered from the previous release version would be very nice.
Rather than making a manual upgrade on a modified store difficult and guesswork, this would target the files that need immediate replacement or integration. Can this become a standard? :) |

Oh that is a good idea!! :) |
I have one good idea a week and that one was it. :)
|
you would see this just by looking at the files of the upgrade kit
|
Guess that one wasn't it :(
oh well, it's only Monday. :) LOL |
Does anyone know how to upgrade a heavily modified X-Cart Version 3.1.3 to the newest ?

1. With lots of coffee and a silly amount of time. Or 2. Hire the x-cart team to do it! Although to be honest I wouldn't do it to V 3.4.0 I'd wait a few more versions to a more stable branch |
I'd set up a completely new site with 3.4.0 and use MySQL diff to estimate database changes, then go through, mod by mod, and port them to 3.4.0.
But, I'll stick with groovico on this and say wait until a more stable release. You'd have to go through almost the same process to upgrade to a version later than 3.4.0, so at least make it worth your while :-D Hope this helps --Kurt |
Good point, but I need a version that is more secure and that let's me have the register_globals set to OFF on my server.
It will be a nightmare to upgrade though since my site is so heavily modified. Maybe I need a custom fix from the x-cart team rather than a full upgrade |
