X-Cart 4.1.0 beta 2 released

|
Below is a classified list of the main changes between X-Cart 4.0.x and 4.1.x branches.
For a full list of changes, please refer to the CHANGELOG. Quote:
Please note that, after X-Cart 4.1.0 beta 2 has been released, no new features will be added to 4.1.0. We are going to focus our attention exclusively on fixes and minor improvements. We welcome your bug reports and suggestions. Thank you. |
You guys totally ROCK!!!!
I wish to see the feature where the customers can use their email address as the username to login. This would reduce 1 more un-necessary field that the customer have to fill out. There is no need to have a separate username field. As I have already mentioned in few other posts, this is pretty much the stardard for all major ecommerce site out there. Take a look at sites such as overstock.com, newegg.com, smartbargains.com, buy.com and several more!!! Hopefully this will get implemented into the next beta release. Once again, thank you for listening to my input. :) (I know there are custom mods for this. However, I would rather see it as part of the release rather a custom hack.) |
I agree with the above, its a pretty much MUST HAVE modification now, its one thing that I will always get modified to do for any future stores that i get developed.
|
after a quick look around im pleased to see that some things have been dealt with.
Ill be adding my new list of things when i get a chance to dig deeper. First thing that I see though is that the code has been fixed up a little but still has tables in tables in tables in tables in tables ................. even if you just use some css on the menus and the dialog box youll cut the code of a page a great deal and loose the font tags and put that code in the css checkout is getting there... although there are still issues with first name, last name |
1) Static HTML pages for manufacturers is great, but I would really like to be able to update the product HTML catalog by manufacturer also. If you have a large amount if products, it's a nuisance having to regenerate the entire HTML catalog when you've only made minor changes.
2) The Froogle export module ought to have an option where you specify your shop currency. The default is US dollars. I submitted my products to Froogle, to find out they were only appearing on the US site and not the UK site as intended. (If you need to change the currency it's at line 140 in modules/froogle/froogle.php) |
Re: X-Cart 4.1.0 beta 2 released
Interesting I just released a Manufacturers Generation in HTML Catalog for 4.0.x; Glad to see this, along with the detailed images dhtml popup are now going to become standard.
One thing I'd like to see in the search is a stop words list used, and perhaps and indexing system with fulltext features and not just %keyword% AND %keyword% as its obvious this similar setup doesn't even work here on phpBB's forums, it makes searching cumbersome, and thats one word I'd want to avoid with potential customers, most use the search functionality of any site to find what they want quickly. Here's some of my suggestions:  http://cart-lab.blogspot.com/2005/10/improving-x-carts-search.html XHTML 1.0 Transitional compliant code, defiantly a plus! Kudos X-Cart team, it seems 4.1.0 will take a turn for the better! 8) |
|
I would like to see the ability to choose which categories are exported to Froogle. Right now everything goes even if it is a product in a category that is not open to All.
|
I agree with Shan on the bloat issue. For example why, for one page do you need so many templates?
rectangle_top.tpl head.tpl *all the stuff in between* poweredby.tpl rectangle_bottom.tpl bottom.tpl prnotice.tpl copyright.tpl I've never understood this. What's wrong with a good old fashioned header and footer? |

Really a good article. but, i think we deviate from the thread title. |
Not sure if this was already mention but for the billing and shipping information if a customer wants to ship to someone else where are they to enter that person's name?
|
On my localhost I am getting following error while search the product in xcart 4.1 beta 2 .
Code:
INVALID SQL: 1064 : You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ') OR () OR () OR ()) AND xcart_products_categories.productid=xc Following is my mysql server info MySQL server 4.0.24-nt MySQL client 3.23.49 Is there any one else facing the same problem ? |
To further streamline the "FastLane Checkout" module, I would definitely love to see the "Shipping & Payment" page consolidated together with the "Place Order" page. This improvement reduces another un-necessary page the customer has to load before he/she can click that "Submit Order" button.
"Shipping & Payment" page http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/4162/paymentmethod1lj.jpg "Place Order" page http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/7235/paymentmethod27ee.jpg |
Send gifts to different recipients
Adding an option to send to someone different than the customer or to a list of recipients make sense and I would welcome this idea since I don't think there is mod out there to address this issue (under any x-cart flavors)
We had quite a number of customers (for Christmas) requesting our products be send as a gift to 3, 4, or 5 different recipients (yes with different shipping options). No way to do it online. Customers have to call and tie up phone lines for up to 20 minutes at a time spelling every different name and address and precising how they want the gift to be send !! Anyone seconding? My version is heavily modified and I am looking to upgrade only once to a "near perfect solution". X-cart 4.1.x seems worth waiting for. plh |
Multiple Shipping Adresses
I would like to see multiple shipping address functionality, but as an option configured in the admin as a module. I use Write it Once software to transfer orders to Quickbooks and it can't handle multiple shipping addresses at this time.
Bob |
QuickBooks 2006 can now handle multiple shipping addresses.

Re: Send gifts to different recipients

You could always do this with an extra field option on all your products so a customer can easily enter in different shipping addresses. Granted you'll need to re-adjust their shipping costs after the order but it beats taking information over the phone :) |
I agree with you Boomer but it still is half-baked version since as you mentioned you would have to alter the customer CC charges for the additonal shipping and, as you probably know, it's always a pain and more hand work and paperwork (figuring the weight, going to the carrier site, entering all the info by hand, and finally getting the charge, modifying the invoice inside QB and reprinting).
Not to mention the fact that the additional charges could be subject to a denial by the credit card company (the client saying this adjustment was done without his knowledge and agreement). It happened to us before and I would like to stay clear of that route. I think getting all the info entered by the customer and for him or her getting the actual total cost before paying is the way to go. Just my two cents. plh |
Got the following error within the "Admin Console" under "Products Management" when I tried to "Search for pattern".
Code:
INVALID SQL: 1064 : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ')) AND xcart_products_categories.productid=xcart_products.produc http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8773/xcarterror11bf.jpg |
*****Improvement suggestion for the customer registration page*****
The "Contract Information" section should be removed. The "Phone" and "Email Address" fields can be moved up under the "Personal Information" section. It would be even better if the "Username" field is also removed. That way, we can just use the email address as username to log in. Going this route, the "Password" field can be moved up under "Personal Information" section as well. And then we can take out the "Username & Password" section too. Two birds, one stone!!! :) http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/4610/xcartregistration7nu.jpg I understand that there are custom mod for using email as username to log in. However, I would like to see this as a default install, out of the box from X-cart release. I am sure many of x-cart customers here would agree with me on this. One less custom mod you would have to deal with during the next x-cart upgrade. :) The same goes for moving the text fields around in the customer registration page. I know you can create custom text fields within the "Admin Console". However, just as I mentioned in the above paragraph, I can't think of any reason why it should be implemented as part of the default install. Cheers -Tuan |

I agree! This is an extreme hassle. When you are shipping to a different address, chances are you are also shipping to someone with a different name i.e., a gift! Defaulting to YOUR NAME and someone elses address just don't work. There really needs to be a name filed there so the customer can enter what needs to be there for them. This option dissapeared somewhere in 4.0.x. Don't know why, but it did. If you 'register' or 'modify your profile', the customer is left wondering where to put the ship to name. http://www.magazinesinthemail.com/cart/files/images/no-bill.jpg |
Since X-Cart 4.0 forms are customzible by admin. Go to "General Setting -> User profile options" there you can specify what fileds should appear during the registration/checkout and whether they are mandatory or not. What you see after install are just default settings.
|
As it is now, I see no option there to turn it on!

cancel my last post. I see that option in 4.1.0, but not in 4.0.17

As an Aussie internet store manager I am so happy to see the changes Xcart are making in the new version. Thank You for listening to requests and responding.
I would ask for one thing more so we can display and sell more products. We have over 1000 products and still adding more every week. I would like to be able choose a suitable template when I add a product and when I create a category. Products in some categories are best displayed in a simple list with a buy now and quantity button. Other categories need a 2or3 column layout with a clickthru to the product details page. Other products have lots of variants and need a template that shows thumbnails (colour swatches), a quantity and multiple add to cart button at the bottom of the page. It would be great to have a choice of dropdown menus, radio buttons, quantity input and checkboxes also make it easier to make the store look great for many different types of products. I dont want to do a whole lot of if then modifications to the code. The more hacking that is done the more difficult it is to upgrade. I want the simple solutions. Basically I want the cart admin to be easy to manage. I want to be spending my time at the other end of the process - customer service, analysing financial reports and chasing new products and markets. Basically you guys can talk about the coding and it goes right over the top of my head. -As a programmer I make a great accountant :). So, I will leave you to sort that stuff out. If you can give me the tools to present my products in the best possible way then I will make more sales. This is the one thing that I find most frustrating at the moment. Hope this helps you make plans for future releases with the views of a non-technical client in mind. |
I am not sure how shipping is working, but if it is like the 4.0 version, then I think it is hosed!
I think that the shipping modules should go back to the way they were and allow us to choose all of the shipping methods we wish to use and NOT have UPS Dicatate to us who we CAN and CANNOT use! Right now, if you use the UPS shipping, it drops other shippers or makes them secondary in a second drop down window. They make shipping mod difficult for the end user to select shipping method. So, in my ongoing vow to NOT USE UPS while they do this to xcart stores, if this is contiunued in the next branch, I will remain on the path I currently am on and that is SCREW UPS! I BOYCOT THEM FOR THIS! Not to shout at xcart users, but I was hoping they (UPS) hear this. I have actually thrown all of their normal carrier business to FedEx and got a cheaper deal with them for it! Ha! I also think xcart should be up front about this as you cannot use ALL shipping methods as you once could (nice single drop down window). So, cart owners are burnt for this in the end as well if for some reason they prefer UPS but also want to carry other carriers adn end up woith cumbersome shipping choices. This is far more worse than Microsoft has been in their manipulation of services offered. here UPS has dictated to xcart what they can actually do with their own software. If I was xcart, I would have dropped THEM! Now with that kind of loss in revenure for all of those stores on the market, UPS would have backed off. I do not see anyone else forced into this. Just my two cents as I have not heard anyone say anything about this in a long time. I guess everyone laid down and took it or I missed something huge and do not know it? |
loggin failed
i've installed BETA 2. But i can not log in.

got the same error I will look at the sql table and see if there is a prob as well |
I had the same problem as well.
I went into the database and did a cut and paste on the password that was there. It was just a bunch of garbage characters, but it let me log in with it. I then changed the password and now I can log in as usual. |
I would like to know if 4.1.0 Beta 2 has address the issue regarding to send emails through SMTP server which requires authentication.
Thank you -Tuan |
Has anyone had any success importing a text file with this version. I'm still having the same problem I was with the beta version 1. I try to import a tab delimited text file and import hangs at the screen telling me that it is 'checking the csv file', and nothing happens. I exported a tab delimited text file of the sample products, then tried to import that file and the same thing happened. I know a few people were having this same problem with the previous beta version, but I would like to hear from someone who has successfully done this.
|
I don't know if this change has been made or not, but in my opinion buttons should not require 14 lines of code and 11 if statements.
Instead, just: Code:
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="{$lng.lbl_langvar}" class="usecss"> |
One more issue I would like to see ressolved in the next Beta release.
1) For the Paypal payment module, the shipping cost does not get pass over to the Paypal payment page. For example....If the customer purchase an item cost $20 and shipping cost $5 so the total is $25. However, when the customer get routed to Paypal, it shows the amount is $25, shipping & handling is $0, and the total amount is $25. I would like to see this minor issue fixed. The correct display should be A) Amount = $20. B) Shipping & Handling = $5 and C) Total Amount = $25. |
Drop Shipping
Will there be Drop Shipping functionality in this version? Specifically, will we no longer be limited to the Company Address as being the only point of origin for the shipping calculations.
We drop ship 90% of our product without laying a hand on it from several dozen suppliers. When a customer orders multiple products in the same cart provided by multiple suppliers, the shippng calculation needs to be able to calculate shipping based on the different zip code origins of those suppliers individually and total them accordingly. |
Agreed on the need to address the ability to drop ship (in X-cart Pro). Shipping should have always been calculated on a per-provider basis. We operate 2 warehouses and also drop ship some items directly from our suppliers and this issue has kept us from migrating two of our sites to X-Cart Pro. There is really no sense in paying for a license when the product does not allow proper shipping calculations.

On the main storefront, the "Advanced Search" function doesn't work.
I click on "Advanced Search" button, type in a product name and click on the "Search" button. Below is the error message I got. Code:
INVALID SQL: 1064 : You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ')) AND xcart_products_categories.productid=xcart_products.produ Same goes for the search function in the "Admin Console", under "Search for products". It will generate the same error above. |
Additionally, I truely hope this issue will also be addressed in future 4.1.0 Beta release. http://forum.x-cart.com/viewtopic.php?t=25029&highlight=import
(When the store owner deletes an item, that specific item will no longer show up in order history for any customer that has purchase that one item. Discontinued items happened all the time. And they should/will be removed, instead of hidden, from the store catalog.) |
Has anyone here able to get the import (CVS file) function to work correctly on this version, 4.1 Beta 2 ???? After clicking the "Import" button, my just hangs and say "Checking the import CSV file..."
Thanks -Tuan |
