TelaFirma - X-Cart Dynamic Image Generator
MODERATORS NOTE: This vendor has stopped responding to e-mails/orders, and hasn't been seen or heard from in quite a while. Until this is resolved, I would highly recommend that you don't order from this company.
Tired of substandard or low quality product images on your category pages? Wishing that you had a better way of handling Detail images instead of having them take up so much space on your product page? Hoping there is something out there that will take care of resizing product images for you that is simple to use? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this X-Cart modification is for you. This image Mod will allow you to upload one large image for the product thumbnail just as you normally would and it will dynamically generate new images as necessary. New images are dynamically created for the Product page, the Thumbs for the product listing pages, thumbnails for the shopping cart and also a popup for a detail - all from the one large image. These images are then stored in their own directory on the server to be used the next time they are needed. It will also do the same with Detail images, creating small thumbnails for each detail images and a popup from them. All the dimensions for each are also configurable from within Admin. This effectively eliminates the "jaggy" thumbnails that are always present on the product listing page. Since new images are automatically created to the size that you specify, you will benefit from better looking images giving a more professional looking site and your category pages will load extremely faster because you will not have to load the large thumbnail images. This will handle JPG, GIF and PNG images and also applies an unsharp mask to the thumbnails that it generates so that they are not blurry. This makes image management much easier and you do not have to worry about resizing in an application such as Photoshop. You would also not have to worry about creating and uploading multiple images. http://www.telafirma.com/mod/ |

Hi
I can vouch for this mod. I've bought it from Telafirma, who installed it on two of my sites, and it's made a very big difference in the quality of the images. Uploading new images is also much, much easier! Installation was fast, and questions were answered wuickly too. Along with Jon's ez-checkout and ez-upsell, I now regard this as an absolute must-have mod for x-cart sites. (and carrie's points for some sites too!) cheers steve |
I too am sold on this mod. I have it working on two sites and it works GREAT, particularly from the client standpoint. They upload one image and they are done....no more trying to teach them how to use Photoshop!
|
I really appreciat all the nice comments :)
|
Seems like an awesome time saving device, especially when you want to fiddle with your image sizes to get things "just right" when messing about yoru store's image. It would seem to enables a lot of creative resizing.
I have a few questions. 1. Since Photoshop is mentioned, the brings me to the question is this Photoshop-like resize quality? Do you have any examples of sites that use it? 2. Is this by installation only, or can I get the mod and instructions? 3. Lastly, will it work to provide the required thumbnails for mods that use thumbnails, too, like Recently Viewed and Instant Search? Thanks :D |
Okay, now that I'm actually setting up my X-Cart and have some idea of how the thing works, I have a more realistic question, heheh... You say above:
"New images are dynamically created for the Product page, the Thumbs for the product listing pages, thumbnails for the shopping cart and also a popup for a detail - all from the one large image. " Does this mean that the mod allows different sized thumbs for product page, product listing, shopping cart, and popup? If so and the quality is at least Photoshop like to the normal consumer, I'm "so in". :) It looks like X by default doesn't do do different sized thumbs by default, yet I"d like littler ones in the listings and cart, and kind of large ones on the product page. |
Having the mod installed on my own site, I have the option to select my thumbnail size, my product page size, and my popup (detailed image ) size.
Its honestly probably one of the best mods out, and EVERYONE should have this installed. I simply have to Make my detailed image (I use 640x480 on my detailed pop ups), upload that pic, and it is done. Its like a Ronco Rotiserie...."Set it and Forget it" :) And to be completly honest, its actually made my page load times much quicker. Check it out. www.ridequality.com |

I'm happy to see your Ronco quote! :D I get a little sad over here that nobody seems to know traditional direct marketing. Ronco excelsat DM. Dude, that's not bad at all. Maybe not the same I could do in Photoshop, but it looks quite close. Really cool. Does seem like a must have mod. Can you set the quality options to decide how much they get recompressed? Then again, I use a lot of transparent GIFs myself for thumbs and JPGs for big ones, so I suppose they wouldn't be degraded much. Also, in case you do perform a custom thumb, can you override the generated one? Yes, I know it's anal retentive, but I'd probably want some products just perfect... taking that extra 10 minutes per thumb to tweak. I have two categories where I want everything absolutely perfect (because there's not many products and they're bread & butter), and then all the rest of the catalog I'm more than happy to set on full auto... especially with an awesome mod like this. Very impressive. |
RQ,
Your category images are SUPER BANGIN'. So clear, a break rotor could come and hit me on the head right from the screen! :) Those are very much like the ones I use not for categories but for product images - I use Knockout and Photoshop to make, what do you call 'em, PhotoObjects. Yeah, that's it. You have nice Photoobjects! Were even these run through this mod? If so, I'd have to say the image quality is just about as perfect you can get on those. |
Ok, I am going to try to answer some .......
edit... This post is now included in the FAQ that is posted later in this thread. |
Thanks for answering all those questions. I'm pretty sure I asked almost every question people were thinking, but didn't ask, so hopefully this will drum up more sales for you. :)

I was actually poking around these sites last night, trying to figure out what was done by your mod or not. I now understand the footprint your mod uses - files in files/cache. My end opinion: wwwwwwoW! Especially with the pearls and girls, this is almost indistinguishable from making all the thumbs yourself manually with photoshop. I also like how you've reworked the product.tpl pages for Angela's Pearls - how you have a big huge image with only the order button to your right, then the description down below. You made it a LOT closer to a hybrid between Sephora.com & Overstock.com, which is what I eventually want. You do some great work! I'll definitely be picking up your mod for at least the product.tpl and popup page, so I can use enormous JPGs there. That's the big plus to me. See, my thumbs are all .gif transparencies due to a color changing DHTML effect I have going on (just like your pearl site, except it changes color slightly) so I don't know if I'd want to use your code on those. I'd have to get rid of the color changing effect, in order to switch those to jpg or another format that doesn't support transparencies. I want to use your mod for a slightly different use than accentuate, because I personally don't have the "jaggy" problem you talk about. My catalogs thumbs are all made just just for the catalog. I do have an issue with some of the mods resizing the thumbs, though, but of course you can't predict how it'll work with those. You know, after looking at all these sites, I can definitely say this should be a defacto standard mod... and if you look at my signature, well, you know how familiar I am with mods. ;) |
shouldnt this feature be implemented from XCART by default?
i find this pretty rediculous that someone else in the community has to make such mod and , *cough* sell them.... |
jsa - Thanks for the compliments on the sites. There has been a lot of time spent on them. This mod is actually something that grew out of the need I had for Pearls by Angela Carol. I wanted good clear images for every page that the pearls were shown on and I also wanted to have small, clear thumbnails for the detailed images - and I didn't want to do it all in Photoshop.
one thing that you might consider with your existing site is to try PNG graphics. PNG will support transparancy and this mod will work with PNG. Just a though. |
What portions of the cart does this mod affect? Looks pretty darn neat, just wondering how much needs to be changed to accomodate it.
|
Quote:
Not much needs to be changed at all. The products.tpl and the products_t.tpl file already use a setting in Admin to set the width of the image, so there is no change there (unless you really want to). The largest change is in the product.tpl file - but it is just replacing the the thumbnail code with some new code. Also, if you have customized a cart skin, and you have set the image X width, then it will use this setting to generate the thumbs. Outside of that, you just replace the product_thumbnail.tpl with a new one. In other words the changes are very very minimal. In terms of Admin functions and working with images - nothing changes. I think that this is the single most important thing for people to realize. You just upload a nice size image (via whatever method you are used to using - CSV, one at a time...) as the tumbnail for the image. This mod takes care of automatically creating new ones where and when necessary throughout the site. There are no extra buttons to push, no extra processes that you have to start running in the background, no weird way of assigning images to the product. The same goes for the Detail images. Just upload nice one as you normally would. |
Ok, since there have been so may questions asked about this Mod I am compiling a FAQ and posting it in this thread. I will be amending THIS post when there are new questions to add.
____________________________ 1) Are the resized images Photoshop-like in quality? When the image is resized to a smaller size, an unsharp mask is also applied to slightly sharpen the image. Just like with all images, the bigger and better image that you start with, the better it will look when sized down. So, if you start with a good quality image and the size of the image is such that there is enough information in the file, then you will have a very nice thumbnail when it is sized down. 2) Is this by installation only, or can I get the mod and instructions? When you purchase this, you will receive an package with all the files necessary and the instructions to install it. 3) Will it work to provide the required thumbnails for Mods that use thumbnails, too, like Recently Viewed and Instant Search? Some of these Mods that are made by other developers will include the Thumbnail URL (path) as part of the product array that is built - some do not. Since this image mod requires the files to be in the File System, it uses this field in the products array to find where the file is. So, Mods like ezUpsell which DO include this field it will work fine with. I unfortunately can not speak for all Mods that have been posted on this forum or for all Mods that are developed by other people as to whether this piece of information was added to their products array or not. The good news is that if it is not there, then it will not break the function of the add-in. It will just function as it always has. 4) Does this mean that the mod allows different sized thumbs for product page, product listing, shopping cart, and popup? Yes - There will be 4 settings in Admin. One for Product Page, one for Catalog pages, one for Pop-up and one for the thumbs that are created for the popups. 5) Can you set the quality options to decide how much the images get compressed? For JPEG images (which most product images should be as GIF images are only 256 colors and JPEG is 16M colors) the image quality is set by default to 80. This has proven to give the best quality/file size combination. The size of the files created are very comparable to those produced by Photoshop. GIF files are set to 256 colors. 6) What if I have created a custom thumb, can you override the ones generated by this mod? Not by default with this Mod. I am sure that if you are good with Smarty, and you understanding PHP then you would be able to write your own section of code to exclude certain things from being processed - but the way this is set up by default, that is not included. Personally I do not think that this is necessary. The images created are 100 times better than what you would have with X-Cart by default. 7) Once I install this mod, what do I have to do to get the thumbnail image to display? Once this is installed, it will automatically generate new images for the different places they are called. The key to this is to start with a larger image. So, lets say that when you add a product, you insert an image as a thumbnail that is 400px wide. When that product is displayed on the product listing page, a new image will be generated for it that is, say, 100px wide. This setting (100px) is something that can be set within Admin also. There is nothing special that you have to do to make this work after it is installed. 8) Does it do it on the fly? Yes... and no... Yes, the new images are generated on the fly, but they are also stored in a cache directory. This keeps the server from having to generate a new one when this exact image is called for again. 9) My images are not stored in the database, is that a problem? Actually this Mod will only work if your images are stored in the File System, so no problem there. However, if you do have your images stored in the database, it will not prevent the images from displaying. They will just display as they normally would in an un-modified installation. 10) How do you tell the store to use the new thumbnail images? This happens automatically. New images are automatically generated and displayed where they are needed (and normally called). The width for the thumbnail on the product listing pages is set in Admin, as well as the width of the image on the individual product page, the width of the popup image and the width of the thumbnails for the detailed images. Again, the key here is to start with an image that is at least as large and what your popup will be. 11) Can I set the dimensions of the images? How is that done? All the widths of the images are set within Admin. There are 4 settings. One for the Product Listing pages, one for the Product Page, one for the Detail Image Thumbnails and one for the width of the Popup Image. 12) What is required for me to use this Mod? First you have to make sure that you ahve GD support turned on in PHP. To do this, you can go to Admin in X-Cart, click on "Summary" in the right hand Admin menu. Scroll down to the Environment section and look for the entry for PHP. There should be a version number beside of this and a link titled "Details >>". Clicking on this link will open a new window with all the details about your PHP installation. Scroll down and look for a section simply named "gd". It should look something like the following: GD Support enabled FreeType Support enabled FreeType Linkage with freetype GIF Read Support enabled GIF Create Support enabled JPG Support enabled PNG Support enabled Outside of having GD Support enabled in your PHP configuration, the only other thing that is necessary is that your product images be stored in the File System. 13) What version of X-Cart will this Mod work with? This Mod was intended for X-Cart version 4.0.x . I have not tested it with any previous version. 14) Do you have examples of sites that are using this Mod? Yes. You can see this Mod in use at: http://www.AngelaCarolPearls.com http://www.AngelaCarol.com http://www.RideQuality.com There are a whole host of others, but I do not have the owners permission to post the links to the sites. |
when setting the dimensions, is it only width that you can set?
can you also set the dimension according to the height?? |
The dimensions are set by width. This Mod resizes the images, it does not crop. Since that is the case, the width is all that is necessary.
|
i dont think i explained to you clearly.....
i dont want the image to be cropped..... so lets say, if i have a cell that is 150x250 and then i set the max-width to 150 from your mod, can all images fit in that 150x250 cell ? whether the images are 200x800 etc... ? or 400 x 1200 ? i really dont care if the images resize to the size of a peanut.... but if i dont set the maximum height, how would it be able to fit in that 150 x 250 cell just by width alone? if i have a one long image, wouldnt it still distort the cell since it will only resize by width? for example: if i have a 400 x 1200 image, and lets say i set the max width to 150, won't the height of the resized image come out to be 450 ? therefore, distorting the 150x250 cell? SO if i set maximum height to to 250, it should fit in that cell by resizing the image to 83x250.... im guessing this is not possible with your mod? let me know if this works or not. thanks. |
i got this but didnt use it yet as it ...
...would not delete old images if you deleted or changed a product ...saved all images one directory instead of splitting them to subgroups such as thumbs, detailed, icons, products etc a good mod so far though but could do with a bit of tweaking |
Regarding Telafirma's mod I am not able to get it to work after following the installation....the images are not resampling. Also, did anybody experience any parse errors after installing the mod? I am running x-cart 4.0.17 gold with advanced order management add-on.
If anybody has any ideas please let me know... Thanks |

I am not getting a parse error anymore it was a Dreamweaver issue... the pictures are not resampling however... here is the link of the cart http://www2.evangelistasports.com/ecart/home.php?cat=1 Thank you... Davide |
Wondering if this mod would work in XC 3.4.6? I would be willing to test it.
|
This looks like it'll become a staple "must have" script around here... so... in the next version, is there's any prospect of:
Being able to feed the script a big 24 bit PNG, and having it pump out an 8 or 24 bit png for the little thumbnails (with transparency data intact), and having it generate good quality JPGs for the bigger images used on the product.tpl page and the the blowup? I know that'd be the killer solution for my site. I hope I'm being clear here: you provide a big, detailed image in a lossless format (or whatever souce format people choose), and have the script spit out the right lossy or lossly format for each of the generated ones. That would provide a best of all worlds scenario, methinks. I'm not a scripter, but I think even I could hack this in... hmm. |
Right now the Mod will support PNG graphics. I never really though about it doing format conversion though. This might be something that I can work in.
|
TelaFirma,
I bought this mod from you and love it so far. Like lkbryant suggested above, I think it would be a good idea to have a max height setting also. Right now, all you can set is the max width for each picture. That way, I wouldn't have to go through all my images and make sure there is white space on the sides in order for there to be some uniformity among my site. It would be great if I could set the max height and width for each picture (e.g., thumbnail, detailed image thumbnail, detailed image, etc.). The hack I did on my product_t.tpl went something like this: Code:
{if $products[product].image_x gt $products[product].image_y}{include file="product_thumbnail.tpl" productid=$products[product].productid image_x=$config.Appearance.thumbnail_width product=$products[product].product tmbn_url=$products[product].tmbn_url}{else}{include file="product_thumbnail.tpl" productid=$products[product].productid image_y=$config.Appearance.thumbnail_width product=$products[product].product tmbn_url=$products[product].tmbn_url}{/if} I know it's a complete hack but it works. If my picture is taller than it is wide then the image is reduced based on height. If the picutre is wider than it is tall, then the picutre is reduced based on width. This way, my picture fits in a box that will never be bigger than my thumbnail_width setting in the admin section. It would be great if you could impliment this into your mod somehow. I should mention that this mod does not stretch pictures beyond their original size. In other words, if the picture you uplaod as your thumbnail is 150 x 200 and you set this mod to resize images to a width of 300, it will not stretch the image. The image will stay in its original size. This is a good thing and prevents pixilation. I just thought I would point that out if anyone was concerned. Thanks for the great mod! T.J. |
smarty error in dynamic image mod
okay, I must admit I feel a bit sheepish not seeing any other errors or problems posted here so forgive my lack of knowledge.
I have installed the mod as directed, my cart is running on a windows server (which may be my problem I am used to linux) and this is what I am experiencing: I uploaded a product: http://www.costlittle.com/cart/home.php?cat=30 the thumbnail works great, then when I click on the image to view the product I get an ugly error saying: Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in D:\hshome\maxfurni\costlittle.com\cart\Smarty-2.6.9\plugins\function.thumb.php(2) : eval()'d code(1) : eval()'d code(1) : eval()'d code on line 51 (http://www.costlittle.com/cart/product.php?productid=66&cat=30&page=1) Here is the path I entered to my images directory when I switched from storing them in the database to the file system: D:\hshome\maxfurni\costlittle.com\cart\images (I am not sure if the "\" are supposed to be "/" towards the end on windows?) Everything worked fine (with the images on the db) before I switched over to storing them on the file system but the mod would not work, so I am guessing the problem lies somewhere therein. Thank you so much for your help... |
PM'd you with some information.
|
Great Success....
The Telafirma image mod is working great thanks their help!!! I would reccomend it!!
Thank You Telafirma |
awesome mod and superior service
the mod is working great now, thanks to all the help from telefirma. I made the mistake of commenting out the files like instead of like {* *} a dumb mistake.
all is well now. |
update from satisfied user
I've now bought this image mod to work on three of my sites, and I'm extremely satisfied.
I had a couple of small issues (display of thumbnails on wishlists, and appearance of alt tags), but Telafirma has been extremely fast to help and has been succesful each time. The results are fantastic, and it makes it so much easier for my providers to add products. Great mod, Great support cheers steve |
TelaFirma,
Besides the popup, will the "detail images" still show? the default product.tpl shows Images towards the bottom of the page. Everyone is crazy about ur mod.. so i guess it must be good huh? HeHe |
Telafirma,
I spoke with u earlier.. regarding the "Click to Enlarge" link .. I want that centered.. but I already set the <td> align="center" but still no change.... i know your busy. but when u see this i hope you have the time to take a look for me . You said something is overiding it. but i can't find anything.. Below is my product.tpl.., please help me newbee out.. anyone.. Thanx.. :-) Code:
{* $Id: product.tpl,v 1.96.2.22 2005/06/03 05:46:02 mclap Exp $ *} |
just above the thumbnail code, there is a line that reads
Code:
<TD valign="top" align="center" rowspan="2" width="100"> Change this to Code:
<TD valign="top" align="center" rowspan="2"> |
That's working now.. but i still dont 'have the popup working properly.. the window sise is not consistant with the pictures.. most of the time it won't show the "Close Window" .. and some images i have a chunk of white space at the bottom.. is there a way to fix this?
|
Telafirma,
step #7 is to modify products.tpl it's optional..I'm just curious on what that file does |
That is optional becuase 99.9% of the time, the products.tpl file does not need to be modified. It already has the things necessary to generate the thumbs properly. This is optional for people who want to take advantage of the extra things such as adding alt text to the images.

As I was telling you earlier, you need to upload new images for the products and you should reimport your products with the new images assigned to them. This will put the proper dementions in the database table for each image. This is crutial becuase this mod uses those dementions to calcualate the proper proportions for the popup. |
Ok. Telefirma I have this mod installed. However, I am having a problem with the popup. It does the width but not the height. So I get a real short but wide popup. What do I need to tweak to make this work. I also have SafetyNetWebs Dynamic URLs MOD installed. I also noticed that the main image does not allow me to click and enlarge just the small thumbnail from detailed images. I emailed you a link to an example at our store. Also, how do I add text at the bottom of the image thumbnail, ie color, zoom, enlarge, etc.
Hooter, your input is appreciated as well. I had to comment out a couple of lines you put into the products.tpl and products_t.tpl files to install this mod, so not sure if it affected your mod for dynamic URLБ─≥s. It doesnБ─≥t appear to have, but would like to make sure. Thanks, TangoDancer |
