How do I right click protect my pictures???
What has to be done to right click protect all of my product pictures???
|
There are a lot of scripts that will do this (see hotscripts.com), but honestly, if someone really wants your images they just have to go into their browser cache and get them. I have found that right-click protect scripts are more trouble than they are worth. If you really want to protect them, watermark them like the stock image companies do.
|
There's no real surefire way to prevent someone from taking images from your shop.
Right click protect is easy to circumvent, and annoys the crap out of real visitors who use their right mouse button for opening links in a new tab or window. Instead you should watermark and digitally sign your images. |
You got it all wrong...
"For goodness sakes! This is the bloody internet! "
And that makes swiping other people's work okay because...? "Why is it that people are always trying to stop other people using their images? " Because they created them and they don't want you to have them and you have no right to them, not sure where you get the idea that you do. "A little reminder to anyone using the internet - the system designed for the free transfer of information: (1) If you use the web: You're using someone else's hard work and ideas freely in order to gain personally or financially. " Really, then why does it cost me to use it? I'm paying for it. "(2) If you have a website: you are benefiting personally/ commercially from this free privilege. " Really? It just fell in my lap? I pay for it...it's not free. "(3) If you have an x-cart store: You're using somebody else's hard work and ideas to gain financially and ... " I paid for the right to use x-cart, once again, and they've made money off of me. I agreed. It isn't free... "(4) If you sell products online: You've gotta be getting the images from somewhere and I bet they weren't your own hard work and ideas. " Wrong again. I bought an expensive camera, I take my own photos. I'll be damned if I'm going to make it easy for lazy people such as yourself to come in and take em' for free. "footnote re (4) - if they are your own creations then why are you worried that people will copy and paste them into their own web-based works? It's the ultimate free publicity!" Well, it never ceases to amaze me how a shameless competitor who can't come up with anything on his own will blatently take your stuff and use it against you. No integrity whatsoever. "What gives you the right?" What gives YOU the right? The LAW says that my images are copyrighted, and that definatley DOES include the web. Just because it would be unrealistic to sue someone for copyright abuse doesn't mean it's "right." "Thankfully, it is impossible to right-click protect images, as you request. If someone wants your images enough then they'll bypass that silly little javascript ('that's not allowed' or 'copyright...' popup that makes it plain to see you are a self righteous twit and just click on: 'View' > Source at the top of their browser window. " It's because people like you are out there that every single image on my site has a watermark on it. Folks, this guy is a prime example of why it's not a matter of "if", but "when" you will have your stuff swiped. If you care at all and don't want your competitors to steal your hard work and ideas, then make sure to watermark them. It's really the only way to slow it down. This free for all attitude will actually degrade the web experience in the end because everyone who cares about their stuff now must paste watermarks on them. Most right click protection you can get arround by right clicking and holding down the right click button, then press the left click button to get rid of the "you cant copy this " warning, quickly release and press the right button again, and you can cut copy and paste it.
Its really simple, and just about anyone needing to steel an image knows how to do this. I personally hate pic theft, especially linkers from Ebay, tryin to sell somthing they are to lazy to get a pic of. That being said, I hate when I go to right click on a page, and get that little lock out notice, its so anoying. I myself, find the only way to discourage theft of your pics is to Watermark them, of course with your dot com name on it. I also prefer to take special photos of my products, using the same background, instead of having a bunch of mix and match photos thru a site, looks pretty unprofesional. |
You can also modify your code so that a 1px x 1px transparent gif takes on the same size as the image you are trying to protect and is layered in front of it.
Someone who really wants your image can still grab it, but if they right-clcik on the image they will be trying to download the transparent gif (i.e. transparent.gif). Example: <div style="position: absolute; left: 5px; top: 5px;">[img]image.jpg[/img]</div> <div style="position: absolute; left: 5px; top: 5px;">[img]transparent.gif[/img]</div> This layers the transparent image over the image you want to protect. When a user right-clicks on it and clicks Save Picture As, it will be saving the transparent.gif image. Again, this can be circumvented. However, most users won't take the time to figure this out and other users will not be annoyed with alerts when they try to right-click something. |
This is a quick 1 line fix that will stop the quick pic grabber.
Code:
<body oncontextmenu="return false" onselectstart="return false" ondragstart="return false"> |
Code:
<META http-equiv="Imagetoolbar" content="no">and Code:
<script language=JavaScript> |

That disables copy and paste all through the site including order forms via the menu, it annoys the hell out of customers so use wisely. |
I don't think you can stop anyone from stealing any digital/intellectual property. All you can do is punish the people who are legally trying to use your products. The only option is to trust the honesty of the masses (which is scary).
If you can see a picture on your screen, all you have to do is hit the print screen button, CTRL+V into Photoshop and crop it. Stolen. You don't even need to bother with the cache, or source code. Same thing with software, with all of the challenge and response codes, it just punishes the legal user. Nothing is more annoying than having to get a response on a Saturday, only to find that you have to wait until business hours on Monday. If you would have just went to Kazza, Grokster, etc. you could have a hassle free working version (albeit stolen). In the audio industry, software companies are using really intrusive copyright protections that work outside the OS and sometimes renders a hard drive unusable. I have heard of some people who buy a legal copy, but then use the cracked version just to save themselves the hassle of the copy protection. People are going to steal you hard work, but it doesn't help to punish your good customers. Just my opinion. |
is there an easy mod to add a watermark?
|
Yeah, i would like to know that too.. I'm scanning all the images I use and don't want others to use my work.

I will suggest you check out www.simplythebest.net there are several free JavaScripts that you can use. I have used the script that you mentioned for my previous web before I switched to X-Cart...check it out, you will find it there. Enjoy  |
Watermarks
If like most folks that take their own pics you edit them before posting them you can watermark them very simply in photoshop. If your photos are your products then you might want to visit http://www.digimarc.com/ and check out their solutions.
Alternatively you can make sure your online pics are a) the lowest resolution you can use that retains what you are attempting to convey and b) use the web palette of 256 colors. At 72 dpi with 256 colors very few pics are going to display properly at any size other than what you save them for. Makes them worthless to rip off for prints and saves on file sizes as well. |
I hope my distributor never figures this out :D
They have the right click thing going on, as we're not supposed to use product images (but it hasn't stopped anyone), and if it wasn't for the litttle toolbar that popsup when you hover, i'd be prt scr, cropping all day 8O Quote:

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
I would like to paste the same code in my head.tpl file but I do not see the <head> tag in my version. Am I looking in the wrong file? skin1/head.tpl
Thanks for all help in advance. Shareen |
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
its in skin1/customer/home.tpl
but id have to say that right click protecting is pointless, since you can grab it in the cache, in firefox using page info, or using print screen |
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
Can someone please tell exactly where to put the right click java code on the home.tpl template? It is not working for me when I put it in the template. I get an error when I try to visit the site. Shareen

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
Shareen, don't even bother with this script as anyone who knows what they are doing can just grab the images from their cache file or view your source code. If you want to truly protect your images, watermark them as discussed above.

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
That is just it, the key word is anyone that knows. most of the time it is the ones that do not know that are tying to steal your hard work.

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
It is just like adding an alarm on your car, a real criminal knows how to get around it but the small fries do not so they do not even bother with it. The average user does not know.

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
What do people that sell clipart do to protect the product images on their web pages???
|
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
I did watermark my pictures and I do not see how this can protect them.

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
Go to Istockphoto.com, one of the big stock photo sites. You don't see any right click protection there, you see watermarks. If you really want to protect your photos, right click protection is a waste of time and just annoys customers who want to send a photo of a product to their friend or save it themselves. Instead of preventing a hacker from stealing your photo, you prevent a sale. If someone wants to steal your photos, they more than likely know what they are doing.

Ok I will leave the right click thing alone. Thanks for your input. Shareen

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
wow- this sure opened up a can of worms...
It's 2008 now, but the issue still persists of copyright transgression ...I am a self-employed artist whose livelihood depends on the fact that only I can sell my artwork. I am honoured when people choose to spend money on my prints that I sell on the internet- and it is a fantastic arena in which to showcase and sell art. But the flip side to it is how vulnerable people creating their own original work (this includes music) are - I have had instances where I have found out that people have taken my images, and it has left me quite disheartened. I do watermark my work, but these days even that is no deterrent. sad but true ! |
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
Well, if you digitally watermark them as well as visually watermarking them, you can easily file suit when you find that image being used without permission.
|
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
Yes- I do , but again, I am very philosophical these days about it, and unfortunately the legal costs of taking someone to court for copyright infringement is simply not worth the time or money - but I would do it I guess if it became a serious issue for me ( and maybe if I was a famous artist ! )
...this has been a good thread to browse through for a sense of solidarity! |
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
I've found that most of my clients don't need to actually go to court....a semi-threatening letter with some tech speak about digital watermarks and copyright infringement usually does the trick :)

Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
is there a simple way to watermark the product images on the site? I have watermarked all the imageson in my images folder but the product shots are not included. Is there simple way via x-cart to add the watermark or do I have to upload all my product shots again?
thanks L |
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
younwill have to do it manually.
|
Re: How do I right click protect my pictures???
If you have hundreds of pictures that you are wanting to watermark, this way is a little easier than doing it by hand, In Photoshop, all you have to do is:
1. make a seperate .psd with your transparent watermark in it. 2. make a stock folder where your watermark .psd is, and where your stock photos are to be watermarked. 3. make a new folder for the processed watermarked images to go. 4. create a new action in photoshop to carry out watermarking your images. http://imagehost.vendio.com/preview/od/odb/action.jpg 5. when you hit record in here, you will need to do the first one manually to show photoshop what it is you want to automate. 6. after your action is finished recording, all you have to do is go to File > Automate > Batch and it will process the each individual image on the folder you chose, with the action that you created. ** I only tried this on all the same sized images. For different sizes i.e. Main, Thumbnail, you may need to create seperate actions. |
