Meta tags for Product pages

I've created a free mod on my site to do the following:

Quote:

This mod takes your product title, breaks it up into keywords and puts it in your keyword meta tag. Also will take your long or short description of your product and will put it into your description meta tag.

Also features an admin interface to add keywords to the end of every product's keywords. For example, add your site name to every product, general keywords for the site, etc.

Example given for 3.5.x but can be applied to other X-cart versions.

I'd post the instructions here, but would probably be easier to explain by downloading the zip on my site and reading the instructions and files in it. Requires 2 file modifications.

Hope this helps!

Hey Carrie, looks like a great mod! I've been asking about product-specific meta tags forever, although it seems to be falling on deaf ears. It may not make a huge SEO difference, but every little bit helps! Now, one small issue, any chance of posting a link to the file directly instead of having to go through the checkout process? :) Thanks!

Padraic,

All you need to provide is a valid email address and use check or money order for payment method. You don't have to put real information in the other fields. I do this to help me determine what free mods are valuable, and other statistical reasons. I will never contact you via that email address unless you sign up for my monthly newsletter.

I've considered just linking to the zips, but this helps me help you guys better. :)

Hope that makes sense!

Carrie

balinor 11-13-2004 10:02 AM

Got it :) Just downloaded it, looks great! Thanks again!

BCSE 11-13-2004 10:06 AM

No problem! I see now that it was you that made the last "purchase." I really don't pay attention to who gets the free orders. Just run reports on products ordered, etc.

Just remember the example is for 3.5.x I haven't had time to make examples for other versions yet.

Thanks! I'll shoehorn it into 4.0.6 somehow :) Ever tried a mod that would add actual title, keyword and description tags to products? I would just love to be able to import all of that stuff via CSV. If META tags can be added to categories, I'm sure it can be done for products as well. Thanks again!

:?: You lost me there the meta tags are made out of the name of your Items and the name of your Items can be imported via CVS.

Kind regards,
Ricky

Ricky,

I think he meant he would like to specify himself meta information for each product (rather than have it auto generated) and have it easily populated using a CVS import. I think this is a great idea. I'll put it on my project list, but I'm swamped right now, so I don't think I'll be able to get to it for atleast a month.

I think what would be best, is to combine the free mod with this proposed mod. That way if you wanted to use the default generated keywords and description from the free mod you could, or for special products, you could put up your own specifications.

Keep the ideas rolling. That's how we created the Customer Rewards Mod which everyone seems to be very pleased with.

Balinor, did you have to do a lot of shoehorning? What changes did you have to make to let it work on 4.0.6?

balinor 11-17-2004 03:31 AM

Still working on it! :D

BCSE 11-17-2004 04:46 AM

I have a client wanting this for 4.0.x So if you want to wait a few days, I'll have it ready. Up to you. :)

Carrie

balinor 11-17-2004 04:49 AM

Thank you Carrie!!!

BCSE 11-18-2004 07:48 AM

Ready for 3.5.x and 4.0.x now! Enjoy! ;)

I may be slow to getting orders processed today as I just became an aunt for the first time last night and will be a way again today for a bit. :) I will process all free orders when I'm home!

Carrie

balinor 11-18-2004 07:50 AM

Congrats Carrie! Being an Aunt is more important than supplying us X-Cart junkies with a new fix, so take your time :D

And thank you once again, this is a very important Mod..everyone should implement it!

BCSE 11-18-2004 07:52 AM

Thanks for the congrats! I'll be around for an hour or two, so if you get your order in fast, I'll set it to processed before I go. ;)

Carrie

balinor 11-18-2004 08:18 AM

Works great in 4.0.7! :D Woo hoo!

BCSE 11-18-2004 08:26 AM

Great! I designed it with 4.0.7 code so should work well there and in the other 4.0.x versions. :)

Cant download meta tag addon

When I sign up for your store and checkout via money order, I get an email confirming the order but no actual product. I am just trying to get the free addon that generates meta tage title, keywords description automatically. It sounds great! but I cant get it :( Advise?

balinor 11-19-2004 01:59 PM

Once she confirms your order you will get an e-mail with the download key :)

BCSE 11-19-2004 02:35 PM

Yep it's on its way. You should have a download key now.

This is just the default cart way, to ask for payment method even if it's 0 price and it won't auto set it to processed. I just haven't had time to customize it to do so as my customers keep me just too busy. :D

Great mod one question

Hi I have just done Carrie's mod and it looks great. I have 3.5 so it works fine. When I now looks at my meta tags it now looks like this

<title>IYOGA FOLDAWAY BACKBENDER- X-CART. Powerful PHP shopping cart software

How can I change the Xcart bit to the name of my store?

Thanks

Mark

BCSE 01-09-2005 09:42 AM

Search in your "languages" link in the admin for x-cart and you should find that part probably in a subtitle label or text. Let me know if that doesn't make sense!

Carrie

BCSE 01-09-2005 09:51 AM

New news on this mod! We are just about to complete an improvement to this mod. It will be a paid version though, but should be inexpensive (I haven't set the price yet..but plan to be no more than $35).

What the new version will allow you to do:
-Add 2 extra fields, one for keywords and one for description for a product.
-Will select keywords and description for a product via the extra fields
-If no extra field values exist, then it will use keywords from the title and/or description from the product description.

So this allows you flexiblity to import keywords and description when you import your products via csv. It will also allow you to not HAVE to put keywords and description specific to each product as it will default to the way the free version works if you don't put anything in the extra fields.

Let me know your thoughts on this. It's been tested and written for 4.0.x We are finializing the install directions now to release this week. If you have any other ideas to add to it, we will consider them!

Carrie

balinor 01-09-2005 10:52 AM

YES!!!!! :)

rjcbear 01-09-2005 01:19 PM

What about we stepchildren that use 3.5.x... Carrie now we sure feel left out.... :cry:

hammersm 01-10-2005 04:40 AM

title tag

Thanks Carrie

In reference to my problem above if anyone has a similar problem the language variable that you need to change is

txt_site_title

this is in admin languages, select english, select text values and then click onto the page with txt_site_title, edit this and update.

Thanks

Mark

Is title supposed to change with this mod?

Thank you Carrie.

I have implemented this mod and it works perfectly to modify the meta tags. However, my page titles do not change from the one listed in the languages section. Have I done something wrong or should the page title be the same as the product name? I am using version 3.5.7 and would love to get this working.

Thanks for your help,

Jim K.

BCSE 01-10-2005 08:48 PM

This mod actually doesn't have anything to do with the page titles or customer/home.tpl, just the product keyword meta tag and the product description meta tag.

The default x-cart way for that version, is to have the title of the page be the product title. If you want to email me your customer/home.tpl I can look quickly and see if you have a mistake in it that's not allowing your product titles to become your page titles. Or you can get my free site title tip that may help too. Many really like that one too.

Jim,

Did you make any changes to the meta.tpl and change the keywords and the description there?

Kind regards,
Ricky

BCSE 01-11-2005 05:07 AM

Jim. Your email bounced back to me when I replied this morning. Here's a copy of my email:
Quote:

Jim,

Looks like you're missing an {elseif $main eq "product"} part.

Here's mine for 3.5.5. This is optimized for search engines a bit by putting the product and category names first in the title (product if on a product page, category if on a category page).

Notice this part below:
Code:

{elseif $main eq "product"}
        {if $product.product ne ''} {$product.product}{/if}

I hope this helps!

Carrie
Code:

<title>
{if $main eq "catalog"}
        {if $location eq ""}  {$lng.txt_subtitle_home}
        {else}
        {strip}
        {section name=position loop=$location start=0 }
        {if %position.last% eq "true"} {$location[position].0|escape}{/if}
        {/section}
        {/strip}
        {/if}
{elseif $main eq "product"}
        {if $product.product ne ''} {$product.product}{/if}
{elseif $main eq "help"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_help}
{elseif $main eq "cart"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_cart}
{elseif $main eq "checkout"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_checkout}
{elseif $main eq "order_message"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_thankyou}
{elseif $main eq "wishlist"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_wishlist}
{elseif $main eq "giftcert"}
{$lng.txt_subtitle_giftcerts}
{/if}
 @ {$lng.txt_site_title}
</title>

I hope that helps!

Carrie

Jim K. 01-11-2005 07:40 AM

Thank You!

Carrie,

Even though it's raining and nasty outside today, I am a happy camper. You made my day with this mod. It now works perfectly. I really like the product name showing up first before the store name. Thanks for all your help.

Jim K.

Alltribes 01-14-2005 10:15 AM

Looks liken the X-cart team thought this mod was a good idea. Check out this from the 4.0.10 changelog:

"Thu Dec 23 15:51:00 MSK 2004[*] - svowl - Improvement: On the product details page (customer area) meta tags based on the product title and short description are used."

BCSE 01-14-2005 10:38 AM

Thanks for the info Alltribes! I didn't notice that. I'll be curious to see how they did it compaired to how I did it. Guess my free version is only good then for versions earlier than 4.0.10, the paid version is still a bit more flexible it seems.

Carrie

Alltribes 01-14-2005 12:20 PM

I was just about to install your mod when I saw that. I'm going to have them upgrade me with my next project and see if I need to anymore.

matt2005 05-23-2005 07:45 PM

4.0.13?

does this mod work with 4.0.13? it seems the meta.tpl is different..

I'm using the free mod..

BCSE 06-11-2005 07:03 PM

Yes it should work for 4.0.13 I may need to update the instructions though as the meta.tpl has changed a lot in the last (2 I think) x-cart versions. As X-cart is trying to implement something similar to my free mod. Although I haven't seen in the x-cart admin yet where to set product keywords or descriptions.

Let me know if you can't figure it out for 4.0.13. When I have a chance, I'll update the code on my site.

Carrie

BCSE 06-13-2005 06:03 AM

I have updated my meta.tpl for version 4.0.13 for my free and paid versions. If you've previously gotten either one from me and would like a new copy, just put in a ticket here with your order number and I'll reissue you a download key for the free one or email you an update for the paid one.

Thanks!

Carrie

Works flawlessly in 4.0.12 even though I had to use the 4.0.13 Meta.tpl

Does anyone know if there's a mod for placing robots.txt and author name on each page?

Allan

BCSE 06-14-2005 04:33 AM

Allan,

Great to see those excellent results. What tool did you use to analyze it?

You can put the robots and author meta tags before the {* BCSE begin *} code would probably be the easiest place to put it.

Carrie
