Generated Thumbs - file size issues

Can anyone point me to a source where I can configure the thumbnail generator used in the product creation area? My thumbnails are 125x125 and averaging around 32k ea. This is absurd, my product images (jpg) at 250x250 averages ~18-20k.

If a category page loads with 10 thumbnails, thats 320k in just images alone.. thumbs should be no larger than 4-6k IMO, and that's easily achievable with jpg's and still retain decent quality.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Pretty sure this was addressed in 4.3.2, was it not?

Possibly, I'm still on 4.3.1. I will upgrade later today and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: Generated Thumbs - file size issues

Css files are large too. Anyone have any tips for condensing css? I am using the artistic tunes template so I not only have a main.css but also and altskin.css. Main is around 87k, altskin is around 36k. I know I can get rid of a lot of the main.css as much of it gets replaced by the higher priority altskin.css. Is there any advantage to keeping these two css files seperate or would combining them into 1 file be better? Either way I need to clean up the main.css, there is a lot of unnecessary lines.

Do it. css files size is ridiculous. You will have the skin1_original in case you need to go back

I nuke the alts all together, no need for them. You can cut the main one down by half at least by removing unused and redundant, poorly coded classes

Re: Generated Thumbs - file size issues

I upgraded my test site to 4.3.2 and generated thumbnail sizes are still huge. I guess I need to go through and manually upload thumbs. Product I created after upgrade still has enormous thumb sizes. One thumb was 45k, it was created from an 22k 250x250 jpg! I don't like png files for thumbnails, jpg compresses better even though you lose some detail. I am not super familiar with using csv's, only played with them a little. Can I replace all thumbnails via csv by declaring a new path/imgname.jpg ? Is there any way to manipulate the generate thumb feature to create a jpg? or at least set a target file size?

I pulled a random category page with 21 products: according to yslow I have 465k of images, 136k css, and 132k of js. Total page weight was ~745k. Ridiculous.. All but about 25k of images are thumbs. 21 thumb images / 440k = ~21k per thumbnail. Is anyone else using "generate thumbs" feature and getting similar results?

Thanks!

perfect. exactly what I needed. I should have been more persistent in my search. Not sure how i missed that thread. thanks! Thumbs are about 1/4 of the size they were and look decent.

Does anyone know if this thumbnail size issue was addressed in 4.4.2?
