Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
I agree with dmr8448's sentiment. The .0 release of X-CART versions has rarely been any thing more than a continuation of beta testing - with inadvertent testing by newbies who do not heed the warnings of people experienced with X-CART release methods to avoid it, unless they are prepared to help QT wring out the bugs. (The warnings to not use 4.4.0 on a live shop are not from QT - they are from experienced members of this community.)
QT is getting better with releases, and the publishing of the bug list is also encouraging. As it stands now - QT has to release something as a .0 to get the testing they need for a clean release. In reality 4.4.0 is more properly called a release candidate, with 4.1 probably being the manufacturing release, and people should treat it as such, even though not official. I continue to recommend that QT try and offer real incentives to people to do testing of their alpha/beta/release candidates so they can have true bug-free .0 releases - see this as one possible suggestion for next time. QT have demonstrated these major releases can't be adequately tested in house - they need this community and if they offer even modest rewards for participating in test, it might go far to achieving a clean release more quickly. And, it would avoid confusion and bad feelings of people who think they have a production release in 4.4.0. |
Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
gb2world, your "posssible solution" with the point system is an awesome idea! QT should also open the bugtracker a bit more and post some of their fixes for issues so that others who do post bugs can see the actual fixes (files or diffs)

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
Yes - QT's transparency with the bugtracker is encouraging - posting fixes quickly would be the next step. But posting the fixes would be related to the "beta" and "release candidate" phases - so not intended for the squeamish or production. People could make decisions about keeping up based upon their skill level and requirements.

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
I agree, but security issues should not be posted in a publicly accessible place, only by directly communicating to xcart.

gb2world,
Great idea! Hope QT implements it in some form or other... |
Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
Hey everyone... so were building a store, starting today actually... converting from Miva over to XCart. We have 4.3.2 installed should we install 4.4.0 now or wait...?

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
If you plan to launch soon, I'd stick with 4.3.2...

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
Thank you sir!! :D

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
I think 4.4.1 will be out before too long. I would develop a new site in 4.4 and upgrade it to 4.4.1 when it's available. The timing should work unless you need to launch before then.

Re: X-Cart 4.4.0 released
The last I heard 4.4.1 not due out till end of September, I'm hoping it's much sooner than that or at the very least offer all bug fixes so far as patches.
