Would having the same product under more than one category count as "duplicate content" for google?

please and thank you.

No, all products have one url so regardless of the category listed in, the link to the product will be the same.

I always prefer to use static pages but you can also manually change the templates to link to /shipping.html and then use mod rewrite in your .htaccess file as follows:

Open .htaccess and find:

RewriteEngine On

After add:

RewriteRule ^shipping\.html$ /help.php?section=shipping [L]

I'll be happy if Jon can improve it.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Why does CDSEO Pro only put the page number on the meta_title tag and not add a page number to the meta_description tag. This is causing duplicate description alerts at Google Webmaster Tools. I turned Category and Manufacturer meta_descriptions off and used a mod for this but now I have to maintain two database functions to do it.

Also I love the XML sitemap. IS over 10,000 urls in one sitemap too many though?

Jon 04-27-2009 11:51 AM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Simply having the page number in the meta descriptions in the majority of all cases isn't enough for engines to see the content as 'unique.' We are investigating ways to better customize sub-pages for future CDSEO versions.

The sitemap can have up to 50,000 urls.

DogByteMan 04-27-2009 11:59 AM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

So if I understand correctly, even though it does get rid of the errors on Google Webmaster Tools, in reality they are still seeing it as somewhat just a duplication and penalizing as such.

Jon 04-27-2009 12:31 PM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Search engines don't penalize for duplicate content, if anything they just rank one page higher than the next. The page titles being changed and having unique urls, prevents duplicate content, though its still ideal to have unique meta keywords and meta descriptions. in the case of sub-pages of a category I don't believe it will have any adverse affect by just duplicating meta descriptions since the description is in fact accurate, but we are investigating possible solutions for this in future cdseo versions.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Hi Jon,

I've been looking at CDSEO Pro for use with our website. At the moment we're using XC SEO v1.4.0 but I think CDSEO is a lot better. We're using X-Cart v4.1.8. Questions I have;

Our website is updated several times a day (new products, product changes, etc.) via a local Access database. We have a product database of roughly 11.000 products, I have no time to write nice URLs myself afterwards, does CDSEO generate the SEO friendly URLs on-the-fly? Of course, when I have time enough I will export all data so CSV and create better URLs but this will not happen often.. I need to be sure new products will also get a clean URL whenever they are added.

We have no actual product detail pages. We only use Manufacturers and Categories, can CDSEO Pro generate links like Manufacturer-Category.html ? See for example a page of our website:

http://www.qualitylamps.eu/dx60-projector-lamp-c-487.html?manid=1050

It would be great if CDSEO would transfer the mentioned link to:

http://www.qualitylamps.eu/3M-DX60-lamp.html

(Manufacturer, Category, addital keyword "lamp")

Looking forward to hearing from you. At the moment we have a test server set-up so we can experiment without messing with the live site :)

Thanks!
Dennis

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

CDSEO doesn't generate urls 'on the fly' but there's an auto-populate feature which will populate all empty fields with the click of a button. We also have an admin addon that can be used enter the SEO information at the time of items.

Be default it wouldn't generate a manufacturer-product-keyword url format. Those could be entered in manually.

You could customize your items to auto-populate when added, and customize your url format, though the 'keyword' portion of the url would be difficult to populate unless you had a general keyword to insert.

we have cdseopro installed and it seems to work well. however, if i change a product in xcart via admin. ie: change title from Liquid Force MP3 player to Freestyle Audio 2gb MP3 Player. this change does not show in the title, address, product, etc. do i really have to go into CDSEOpro and rename it again for every single product that i change in xcart?

The long answer:
CDSEO was purposefully distinguished from product titles so that when products were renamed, search engine positioning would not be affected, and urls would not become broken (like some previous url mods including the html catalog). Also because often SEO data is optimized from something other than the product title alone.

The short answer:
Yes.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

ok, so if i got this right.

if i make a NEW item in admin xcart, CDSEO will take care of the product name so it matches automatically?

but, if i take an existing item and change the wording of the product name, cdseo will not pickup on that change and I will have to go in and do it manually?

Jon 05-07-2009 02:59 PM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Correct, if you want CDSEO to auto-populate then it will use the product name and after will not change unless you do so manually.

this would be very helpful as i dont fully understand how to best fill them in.

I don't fully understand the auto-populate feature but I think I'll go ahead and take the gamble. The price seems fair enough to me :) I hardly ever go into the X-Cart backend because I don't need to. All products are updated via our own offline database in Access. Maybe I can talk to our Access developer and let him add a field to fill in the URL when the products get uploaded to our website, do you think would this be possible Jon?

The keyword would indeed be general, we only sell projector lamps so the keyword would be lamp, it's also multilingual so I don't expect any problems here.

You could add fields to your access database and customize your import to put the new fields into the wcm_cdseo database table. Alternatively you could also just import and then run the auto-populate feature, or you could customize the ability to run the auto-populate feature from cron.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Keywords are pretty much a non-issue as they aren't often used by search engines any more, but it never hurts to add them.

Lets look at this product:
http://www.cosmickites.com/freestyle-audio-soundwave-waterproof-2gb-mp3_player.html

Keyword Research
First thing to determine, is what keywords people are going to search for to find this product. Possibilities include:
waterproof mp3 player
water proof mp3 player
soundwave mp3 player

You then do some keyword research to find out what people are ACTUALLY searching for and get some other suggestions, so put these keywords in at:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Here you can find out how competitive a keyword is, as well as how much it is actually searched for.

waterproof mp3 player is by far the most searched for keyword, but it is also the most competitive, so trying to rank #1 for it will be more difficult. Looking at something like soundwave mp3 player, there's far less searches for it, but its easier to rank #1, so you need to determine if you want to go for it or take advantage of ranking #1 for the lesser searched for term.

Note, regardless of what you choose for your page title and meta tags etc., you should always optimize for several of these keywords in your content body, and perhaps even have multiple pages optimizing titles for the different possibilities.

Note also that if we had optimized for water proof mp3 player instead of waterproof mp3 player we would have been optimizing for a keyword that gets only 3% of the traffic of the word without the space.

Page Title:
Should contain the #1 keyword(s) you want to rank for first:
i.e. Waterproof Mp3 Player by Soundwave

Link Title:
Should contain the #1 keyword(s) you want to rank for.
i.e. Waterproof Mp3 Player

Meta Keywords:
Should list a few of the keywords you want to rank for:
i.e. waterproof mp3 player, water proof mp3 player, soundwave mp3 player

Meta Description:
Should list your keyword first, but also since it appears in search engine results, could be the difference between somebody clicking or not clicking on your link, so some marketing savvy here helps.
i.e. Waterproof mp3 player from Soundwave is a durable, shock-resistant, 2GB MP3 player making it the perfect waterproof mp3 player for listening while playing water sports.

URL:
In general will be similar to your page title:
i.e. waterproof-mp3-player-soundwave

Hope that helps.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Since installing CDSEO, about 25% of my urls contain an occasional underscore character where there was a hyphen character in place of a space character. Now Google is reporting that it can't find these pages. For example, for the product named "1001 Little Parenting Miracles, by Esme Floyd", what was:
stevesbookshop.com.au/1001-little-parenting-miracles-by-esme-floyd.html
is now:
stevesbookshop.com.au/1001-little_parenting-miracles-by-esme-floyd.html

Why the underscore character?
Is this the way it should work or have I done something wrong?

Thanks, Steve.

Jon 05-08-2009 03:04 PM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

When auto-populating CDSEO uses _p instead of -p when the letter p is in the start of a word so as not to conflict with its category pagination.

Since you are using the default settings this is a non issue and you can change the _p back to -p by running this SQL patch:

Code:

UPDATE wcm_cdseo set cdseoUrl = replace(cdseoUrl,'_p','-p');

Steve: Note that since you dropped the /shop/ from your urls you have many many broken links. You can add this to your .htaccess after 'Rewrite Engine on':

RewriteRule ^shop/(.*)$ http://www.stevesbookshop.com.au/$1 [R=301,L]

When I installed CDSEO, some of my categories, products, etc., in X-Cart had meta descriptions and some not. I then ran "Auto-populate empty CDSEO fields only". Now I'm updating these fields in X-Cart including adding information if the field is empty. Is it appropriate to run CDSEO "Delete and re-populate all CDSEO fields"?

Thanks, Steve.

Hi Jon.

Just had a thought. Does this RewriteRule mean that search engines will think that /shop/ is still valid and continue to list it, or do they take the redirect to mean that /shop/ is no longer available and eventually remove the errors?

Also, Google Webmaster Tools is still showing some /cc/ link errors from when I was running CubeCart about a month ago. Will these eventually disappear?

Thanks, Steve.

You don't usually ever want to run delete and re-populate. If you just auto-populate empty fields any fields that didn't previously have information will have information added if available. The seo information is often best input directly into CDSEO.

Since the developer of xcseo has shown very questionable ethics and has routinely accessed peoples websites and making unauthorized changes for self promotion, I highly recommend removing xcseo completely as for me his encrypted code is questionable.

The R=301 component of the rewrite rule indicates that the page has moved. This will tell search engines to update the link to the new url, and transfer all associated SEO ranking. The /cc/ link errors will eventually disappear but it may be appropriate to do 301 redirects on them also, i.e.:

Redirect 301 /cc/old-url.html http://www.example.com/new-url.html

You can also use google webmaster tools to request the removal of urls, though where possible 301 redirects are preferable.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

hello Jon
our SEO guy installed this for us because he said it was essential to seo friendly url's etc. seems really cool, however, we have an issue that i am not sure how to handle.

every year we redo every single product in our store. we go into xcart admin and change titles, and descriptoins and pictures of items along with price etc.

it seems really overwhelming to make a title change in xcart admin and then have to go into cdseo and do the same change.

the process that normally takes us a few hours will be easily doubled as we have to type in 2x the information.

why is there no auto update between product titles in admin and cdseo?

is there a workaround to facilitate this process?

for us to create all new products is way too labor intensive, that is why we take existing ones and just tweak them.

thank you in advance

You could install the x-cart admin addon so you can modify the SEO information at the same time (http://www.x-cart-seo.com/cdseo-pro-for-x-cart/xcart-admin-addon.php), or you could request a customization to synch your information every time a product is saved.

Hi Jon.

I tried installing this. I'm running x-cart 4.2.1 and had a few problems / questions.

Code:

OPEN skin1/modules/Manufacturers/manufacturers.tpl
Find:
<tr>
<td colspan="2"> </td>
<td><input type="submit" value=" {$lng.lbl_save|strip_tags:false|escape} "{$disabled} /></td>
</tr>

Couldn't find this exact string. So I added the code before:

Code:

<tr>
 <td colspan="2">&nbsp;</td>
 <td class="SubmitBox"><input type="submit" value=" {$lng.lbl_save|strip_tags:false|escape} "{$disabled} /></td>
</tr>

Presume this was correct?

Code:

OPEN admin/pages.php
Find:
func_header_location("pages.php?pageid=$pageid");

This string occurs twice. Which occurance are we looking for?

Thanks, Steve.

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

Hi Jon,

I've installed CDSEO Pro on our test server but ran into the first problem. We have some custom mods installed for our store and I suspect they're interfering with CDSEO Pro. When I select a product on our test server the links are generated but I get a 404 error:

Code:

The requested URL /cdseopro.php was not found on this server.
But of course the file is on our server, 100% sure. And also I think this is suspicious, the link is generated as:

Code:

Acer-PD100-lamp-EC.J2101.001.html?&manid=1100
but if I try the link without the addition &manid then still I get a 404 error. Any ideas? I can provide a FTP link but this test server is well protected and it's hard to login.

Thanks,
Dennis

EDIT, I think I have located where the &manid addition comes from in the URL, in home.php I have:

Code:

if ($manid) {
    $cat_is_man = func_query("SELECT $sql_tbl[manufacturers_categories].manufacturerid, $sql_tbl[manufacturers_categories].categoryid, $sql_tbl[categories].category FROM $sql_tbl[manufacturers_categories], $sql_tbl[categories] WHERE $sql_tbl[categories].categoryid=$sql_tbl[manufacturers_categories].categoryid AND $sql_tbl[manufacturers_categories].manufacturerid='$manid' ORDER BY $sql_tbl[categories].category");
    $_categories = array();
    if (!empty($cat_is_man))
        foreach($cat_is_man as $key => $value)
            $_categories[$value['categoryid']] = $value['category'];

    $smarty->assign("_categories", $_categories);
    $smarty->assign("manid", $manid);
}

Don't ask me what it does though.. :)

Hi Jon.

I installed this x-cart admin addon, but it doesn't do what I was expecting. It just provides CDSEO fields within the X-Cart product update page. So, I've carefully backed out through the install document.

However, the replacement of -p with _p in the url is happening again. I've installed the patch that you gave me before:
Code:

UPDATE wcm_cdseo set cdseoUrl = replace(cdseoUrl,'_p','-p');
but the _p replacement is still happening.

Suggestions please?

Thanks, Steve.

steve.thompson 05-15-2009 12:18 AM

Re: CDSEO Pro - Complete SEO Solution - Custom Urls, Page Titles, Meta Data, Link Anchors

I misunderstood the use of the patch. I thought that it was a one-off.

Seems that the patch needs to be applied whenever I create a product with a "<space>p" in the title. Can I edit CDSEO so that it does not do the "-p" to "_p" replacement? Or do I need to run the patch every time?

Thanks, Steve.
