Does anyone have image verification working?

I verified that I have an enabled and working GDLIB but still no luck getting the verification images to show and forms continue to work as if the option isn't even on (even though the input box and 'click to download a new image' are present).

This is also happening with a fresh install 4.1.4 with no upgrading in our case.

I'm guessing I'll have to open a ticket on this to find out what's going on... nobody has image verification working?

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

Vladimir,

Although I installed your login patch, login is VERY, VERY S-L-O-W on macintosh computers, runnng either safari 2.0.4 or firefox2. On windows boxes, the login is much, much MUCH faster!

Can someone with a mac and windows test platform do an A/B and prove me right or wrong?

The tests should include:

1. fast lane checkout, step 2: register new user (with and without store "membership")
2. move through checkout steps
3. while logged in, add items to cart, and then checkout.

It is my opinion that the mac is 5-10x slower than windows. What's going on in the mac side of the code that is slowing it down?

My Mac computer is a G5 2.7DP, 8gigs of ram, SATA II 4x500 raid, running OSX 10.4.8 - this baby is a screamer. It USED to be a rocketship on my site (4.1.3) but since 4.1.4, it's slow as a turtle. My other mac is a g4 laptop -- it too is stuck int he mud at checkout. My windows boxes are varied... a P4 2.4, an AMD 4400 dualcore... both boxes are lightening fast for checkout.

Can anyone explain why suddenly since 4.1.4. login and moving through checkout is much, much slower on a mac than windows?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

If your store is live, you may want to use the login file from 4.1.3 until they get it resolved, that's what I'm doing - it works better.

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

There must be something not right here..
Xcart 4.1.3 release : 2 months + 1 week and only 9 forum pages
Xcart 4.1.4 release; 10 days and 13 forum pages......
Houston, I think we have a problem!

carpeperdiem 12-18-2006 07:18 PM

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

The reason (i think) is that few users installed 4.1.2 and upgraded. MANY installed 4.1.3 and are moving forward. This must be the reason...

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

Ok it looks like the random add to cart problem is kind of fixed. However, it looks like now, instead of the product not showing up, it now adds the main product except the options you selected on the product page is missing.

Thats better then an empty cart, but it looks like this problem still needs some work.

Any one else noticed this problem as well?

lachild,

Are your referring to your own store here? Does this only happen occassionally or is it something you're seeing each time you add a product w/ options to your cart?

No it's completly random. Most of the time products are added to the cart with no issues. Sometimes thier not. This was a problem addressed in the change log for 4.1.4.

At least now they are seeing SOMETHING and not simply a "Your Cart Is Empty" message. It would be nice however if the actual product WITH options showed up. But hey it's getting better.

It's not a serious problem and most of the time I am unable to reproduce the error, so it's no wonder it's not completly fixed... If you cant reproduce the problem when your attempting to fix it, you just end up guessing at what's wrong.

Does anyone have USPS labels working? If so did you already have your API tested and set up? I can't get past the test process.

The test doesn't work you have to go live. You will also have to call USPS and tell them you are going live.

I think he is saying that the 4.1 branch is still at beta quality due to the level of bugs. I am staying on the 4.0 branch until this software becomes ready for live use. As a business I cannot risk my income on flaky software.

The beta is long over and it went through final candidate phase and has been released as a final product. While it has not yet been considered the "stable" branch I have found 4.1.3 to be very stable and have no problem using it. Just because a new update comes out doesn't mean you automatically install it. I haven't upgraded anyone to 4.1.4 yet.

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

Upgrading from v4.1.3 to v4.1.4 seems to be hard enough for quite a few people, I'd hate to have to do it from v4.0.x.

That said, if you're in a situation where you can install v4.1.4 from scratch it hasn't been my experience so far that it's 'flaky' or 'beta' software. I'm sure there will be bugs that need to be fixed, but I've yet to run across anything other than issues getting one of the new features - Image Verification - to work.

Was the log in issue in FireFox only experienced by a few people? Was it a coding issue or a user install issue? Was the slow log in under Mac OS X a code issue or a user install issue?

From the problems listed in this thread for an upgrade that took over 3 months to be released just seems out of line with modern software development and different from X-Cart development from the past. I have been using the cart for almost 4 years and have noticed a change. If the code structure for the cart is getting too complex for the dev team to be able to update, test on multiple platforms and browser setups internally and release on a regular basis then maybe some of us users with in depth experience of the cart and a wider variety of install environments can offer a second source of testing to the dev team before updates are released to general users.

starwest 12-20-2006 03:50 PM

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

I can only speak from my own experience on that one. I didn't see the login issue at all when I installed a fresh copy on v4.1.4 and tested with Firefox, IE, and Safari on both Windows and OS X. I've patched the files anyone, because I didn't know if it was something server and/or client-specific that was causing problems for others.

With that said - I agree with you that it would likely help out quite a bit with future releases if there was a roll-out to customers willing to try the update and test things out before it was released to everyone. Perhaps that's how they see the current system for releases though. There is another 'stable' version of X-Cart which the majority of sites are still using, so in essence most of the people trying the updates from a non-stable branch and posting on this thread are that second source of testing.

Yeah it seems the users of the 4.1 branch are the testers but are new customers just buying the cart for the first time able to purchase the 4.0.19 stable branch or are they forced to use the new 4.1 branch?

I will start a new thread for advanced users to offer testing to the dev team.

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

I hope they take you up on the offer.

I'm a fairly new user myself. I certainly wasn't forced to use v4.1.x, but because of the amount of modification my site will have I didn't want to try to update from v4.0.x in the future.

The naming convention of calling v4.1.x the 'current' branch is likely pulling in a lot of new users - who wants to be on the old version when they're just starting out?

kabam 12-20-2006 06:41 PM

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

I'm a new user and I'll weigh in here and say that I chose the 4.1 branch because it is the 'current' branch, the demo uses 4.1.x, and everything that I saw on the X-Cart website was about the 4.1.x branch... why would I even think there is another branch (being new to X-Cart and all). The fact that some people still say "oh, so you're using the beta... just go back to 4.0.x" still really get's to me (I'll spare everyone my rant). I also ran into the problem where I attempted to go with 4.0.x as suggested, but it would not work with MySQL 5.0, so I was more or less stuck with 4.1.x. I'm hoping that a 4.1.5 comes out soon that I can move my 4.1.3 installations to. So far (with a few odd exceptions), my 4.1.3 installations have been fine.

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

I'm running 4.1.4 on my PC using Uni Server, and have had no issues with Firefox login or with captcha...both are working perfectly, so I would have to say they are either upgrade or server issues.

4.1.4 works great. There are still people out there using 3.5, if you can believe that.

Same here. I've Installed 4.1.4 on Linux (see siggy) then Inported my Products & Shipping Details (I had to edit the CSV files slightly thou) and have had few problems. Login worked and is nice and fast, both on IE and FireFox (Version 2.0.0.1 is just out, btw), and Image Verification worked first time. Had a few teething problems with PayPal which are now sorted, but apart from that, it's running fine.

There could be a number of things causing 4.1.4 to knacker up, Uploaded wrong, corruption, dodgy Servers (not accusing anyone thou!)

I just don't understand how it can work fine on some people's Servers, and terrible on others... :(

I tried an upgrade on a fresh install of 4.1.3 with minimal mods and it had problems. So I expect it would not work with 4.1.0

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

All in all 4.1.4 is great. To those that said the FireFox issue was false. Nope it was real! They made a patch for it.

Question: For some reason, it seems that if you import a sheet of products, it will not autocreate the category. Is that just my computer or is that a new X-cart thing? Versions prior would create it for you.

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

I swear this was like going to the dealership to get my car fixed. Post a message and BOOM! it now works.

Let me test this theory out, does anyone have $1,000,000 they can give me? I lost mine and need to use it to make $1,000,000. If this works then next year, I will make $1,000,000 before you can give it to me. HA HA!

FEATURE REQUEST:
When you add an extra field to the product database, give it an option to show only in admin as well. Right now, if you don't display it on the site you can't do a product search for it in admin within "Search for Products."

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

BTW, anyone having difficulty getting the "Image Verification" to work -- make sure the php GD Library is installed on your server.

http://www.php.net/gd

I can't find any references to this in any of the xcart read-me docs, or the x-cart website (the only reference to GD Lib was related to X-Magnifier): http://www.x-cart.com/cart_system_requirements.html

Quote:

Advanced requirements and recommended settings

Certain parts of X-Cart's functionality rely on using external files. Accordingly, your web server must be allowed to run external executable files (like Perl) and to make outgoing connections to the Internet (that is required for online payments). Loopback connections must be allowed by server firewall (required for HTML catalog feature).
The following components may be required:
  • GDLib 2.0 or higher (for X-Magnifier addon).

Well, this should be changed to include "Image verification". X-Cart is trying to charge me 25 support points to tell me to enable GD. I am contesting this as we speak.

[EDITED: X-cart has agreed to not charge me for this "advice". Thank you. They agree that this should be clearly documented.]

A simple, "we failed to put this into our published specs or readme" would have been the right thing to do. Call it a "product warranty issue".

Anyone else had to pay support points for this issue?

I'm a little upset since x-cart is using many of us as their beta site, and then when we report bugs, sometimes we get hit with support points. This is simply wrong.

<rant> Dear x-cart: you can't have it both ways! You can't release buggy products and get early adopters to gamble on using it, and then charge us for fixing your mistakes. Failure to document the code is as much a bug as faulty code. If you knew GD Lib was needed for Image verification, you should have stated it somehwere. Otherwise, you can't be charging your customers to correct your inadequate documentation. </rant>

[EDITED: X-Cart did the right thing and they are not going to charge for this "advice". A reminder to everyone that a forum search is as important as any printed docs. Now we know. ]

Agreed, state it at least the following 2 places:

1) during installation where the installer is checking for critical dependencies
2) during activating Image Verification in the Modules screen, automatically do a check test for GD Lib. If not installed, uncheck the Image Verification checkbox and display a warning so that we don't assume that it is on and working.

starwest 12-26-2006 09:32 AM

Re: X-Cart 4.1.4 released

Agreed!

I think the only reason I knew that GD Lib was required was that the 3rd-party mods out there for CAPTCHAs stated it was a required element.

Unfortunately for me, I have gdlib enabled and image verification still does not work on a fresh install of v4.1.4. I'm guessing its a server config issue though, since it seems enabling gdlib did the trick for the rest of you.
