In 4.4.x there is no repository for the original files although after installation you can just copy skin directory in to a new one and create that repository yourself. The new skin_backup holds the files you edited, pay attention, through the xcart interface. So if you edit any file from admin edit template its original copy will save in that directory, and if you edit it again it will save a copy including the first edit and so on. If you use ftp to browse and modify files like most of use do - no luck then, you have to take care of the backup yourself

ah, so that's what that misnomer of a directory is for...

I wuz lookin in the admin for a button entitled, "put all the skins (crapola) U don't use into the skin_backup folder for easy, one-step deletion"

or sumthin like that :-)
