Sent you a PM royng...

auth.php should be in your root folder, and auth.tpl is in your skin1 folder.

I've never been able to set it up so that column view is the default, but the switching works great. If you need some help getting it going I'll do my best to remember how it all worked, it was awhile ago that I set it up.
